Trust me, it ain't gonna happen soon for precisely the reasons Jon describes and
then some.
Ancient tourney gamers are different but only up to a point. Yes, we might
consider going to an extra show or drive the extra 200 miles to make a tourney.
But, lemme clue everybody in on the #1 reason people go to Historicon:
To shop.
Period.
I know this from working the conventions intimately during my six years on the
East Board.
Holding the NICT at Hcon makes participation in the event e*a*s*y. Holding it
anywhere, and I mean anywhere else, makes it hard for guys because they realize
that they might have to give up a trip to mecca in order to play in the NICT.
And for some folks, that's an easy decision one either side of it. But, the
idea is to make their decision easy.
I have the most experience with the "roving NICT" concept and everytime we moved
it "off site", we'd lose a minimum of 25% of those who would otherwise
participate. That could bump up to 50% at times. And that was when TOG was the
only game in town.
We are nowhere close to that anymore. We get more participation (the bottom
line) and waaaaaay too many side benefits for holding this at Hcon.
Like Jon, if all the stars aligned, sure, I'd be willing to do this elsewhere
but that ain't gonna happen anytime soon.
