Gents;
Last night Todd Schneider came over to discuss some real world
business topics, and of course, roll some Warrior bones. Other than
2 Fast Warrior games, my exposure to Warrior has been nil. I would
have to harken back 15 years ago to 7th Edition for any meaningful
experience, and Warrior is a much improved and different game than
TOG. My thanks to Todd for coaching me last night and helping me to
re-discover some of the nuances in Warrior. Next week I hope to
continue to 'shake off the rust'.
I played my Marian Romans against Todd's 'bow army from hell'
Aracaunians. I would like to offer some observations of this 1200
pt. boffo, coming from a 'rank greenie'to the system.
Although there is some complex troop weapon system interactions, if
you use good tactics and handle your units in a logical fashion, you
will do pretty well.
1.I really, really like how Romans work in Warrior. It captures the
feel, and IMO, the flexibility, of arguably the best military
machine of the ancient world.
2.Finding answers to questions that popped up was very easy thanks
to a well laid out rule book.
3.I like the gradual deterioration of fighting abilities that occur
with your units through the fatigue system. Although not new, this
system better reflects the battle effects than some other rules
systems that I am familiar with.
4.The morale system is great-I found myself trying to minimize my
potential wavers, and to get Todd to take as many as possible. This
feels right, and with some other systems I have played, morale is
very abstracted.
5.Troop placement at set-up is very important. I would encourage
newer players to try some solo dry run placement exercises. Get a
feel for the spatial seperation between units, movement distances,
shooting ranges, etc.
Thanks to the FHE for all their work on Warrior. Looking forward to
getting my copy of Oriental Warrior. I may have to set aside my
planned Wallachians in 28mm, for something a little more eastern!
