PostPosted: Fri Aug 27, 2004 7:14 am    Post subject: New Player Armies Survey (NPAS)

The discussion of LIR as a beginner's army or not is VERY
interesting to newer players, and highlights that different armies
demand and teach different skills. So I propose over the next month
ot two to collect responses of players (experts through experienced
players both) to this survey. It's intended to collect
recommendations for armies for new players (I hope for at least a
dozen diverse ones) in a combined file to be put in the New Players
directory.

There are a number of essay "questions" below and a place for
counterpoint criticism or dissent as well -- it's beneficial to have
alternative points of view, though I will want to edit down
repetition of the same points. Given the illuminating nature of the
LIR comments, there is a short PART TWO asking about armies that may
not be suitable for beginners -- they may be too hopeless, too
complex, too frustrating, teach the wrong lessons, etc.

The file will start with a few paragraphs on army choice that will
highlight that these recommendations focus only on suitability for
beginners and that a lot of other factors go into choosing one's
armies, such as historical interest, style of play, emotional
attachment, etc. (I'd like to borrow some existing or new language
from people on this list for this introduction)

This is intended as a service to players rather than a forum for
debate, so try to keep it audience-focused. The projected audience
should be assumed to have some prior ancient wargaming experience
and both read the rules with care and played a few games (or at
least studied the demo battle). Commenters will have the chance to
amend or correct comments on the initial posted draft file before a
revision.
