could whoever wrote the Nikephorian List in Holy Warrior please let
me have a bibliography.
I am just interested in following up some ideas and getting a deeper
understanding of it.
Thanks a bundle.

*Technically*, Bill Low and myself "wrote" the Nike Byz list. That being said,
all we exercised was editorial control over what the true author, Paul Georgian,
submitted. Paul wrote all the Byzantine lists, we edited them for a variety of
technical reasons but didn't change anything essential. I've cc'd Paul on this
reply.

That would be me. :-)
The bible for Nikephorian Byzantines is of course, Eric McGeer's Sowing the
Dragon's Teeth. It's still available from Dumbarton Oaks, I believe. Besides
the translation of the Praecepta of Nicephoras Uranus it contains a wealth of
other information gleaned from Eric's Phd study of the 10th century Byzantine
Military. Also, anything by John Haldon such as his Byzantine Praetorians and
his more recent works The Byzantine Wars and Warfare, State and Society in
the Byzantine World are very useful. Another interesting history is The Days of
the Warlords, 969-991 by Paul Baum. One of the most useful texts is an
unpublished manuscript translation of the History of Leo the Deacon by Mary
Alice
Talbot that she was kind enough to send me 15 years ago. If it's ever
published it'll be the seminal history of the Nikephorian era. I've alos gotten
the
book of poems of Al' Mutanabbi the court poet of Saif ad Dawla where he
describes the immediate pre Nikephorian Byzantine army attacking his patron.
All
good stuff, but start with McGeer's book.

To Paul Georgian...
Its Mary Talbots translation I am after, Do you think she would let
me see it?or would you?.
I know its a lot to ask. I know from my own experience that academics
are (quite rightly) shy of letting people have their hard work before
publication, even the ones who are your mates!
I ahve read all of the generally available stuff, most of what is
published on the net and lots of things from journals. I am not just
starting out I am trying for a conclusion!, but find I am severely
disadvantaged without Leo.
Thanks
Robin
