Salutations, gentlefolk,

This came over another email list - thought I oughta pass it along.

Yours, John Desmond - jafd26@...

> From "Tracy Brant" <tbrant@...>
> Subj Emergency Preparedness for eGroups listowners and
readers

> This is a note from ME, not an official warning from eGroups or
Yahoo. Feel free to forward this to anyone that might find it
useful.

> As you may know, Yahoo bought out eGroups recently, although we
haven't seen any real changes from that yet. They also bought
Geocities and WebRing.

> The owners of WebRings are having a HIDEOUS experience with the
transition. Many have lost management access to their rings, had
their rings disappear completely, or suddenly realized that Yahoo
was about to insert advertising into the ring fragments. That
Yahoo privacy policy also concerns them. No one from Yahoo is
providing any support or answering questions. Many are moving to
other ring services.

> I see this as a clear warning for those of use that use and
manage eGroups lists. When Yahoo gets around to making changes to
eGroups... and they WILL... we could all be in for a rocky time.
eGroups is a great place to manage and read a large number of
lists, and to search an index that will turn up dozens of options
if you want to read more lists.... but the folks with WebRings
thought their thing ran just fine, too. Yahoo will at least make
mistakes... and they may not have the support in place to answer
individual questions.

> It is all but guaranteed that you will be asked to get a "Yahoo
ID" in order to run or belong to an eGroups list on Yahoo. READ
the Yahoo privacy policy before you do. Some people feel that the
number of integrating services provided by Yahoo is worth giving
up some privacy, some don't. Be aware that Yahoo NOW owns eGroups
information... but are likely bound by the eGroups privacy policy
you agreed to... for the moment.

> In the end, eGroups won't disappear... it's too valuable a pool
of email addresses for Yahoo to lose. But it WILL change and the
transition may be difficult. Be prepared

> LIST OWNERS

> Keep an up-to-date printout and text file of your membership
lists. Get into the habit of updating that at least once a week.
If you lose your list, you can move it or re-establish it. You
can at LEAST send a private email to your membership and let them
know what is going on.

> Start looking at your other list serving options. If you have
a website, your host may support a simple listserv you can use.
Run a search or check out some webmaster sites, like CNET, to find
other list hosting options. ListBot is one, there are others.

> If you have important data in your eGroups space, make copies
of text files, images, link lists, etc. Similarly, if there are
posts in your archive that you find valuable, copy them to storage
elsewhere. Copy anything that will be painful or annoying to
suddenly lose.

> LIST READERS

> Make a list of the email addresses of the people who OWN the
lists you read. If a list disappears, you can contact the owner
outside of eGroups to see where it went.

> If there are images or link lists or information files you love
on any of the lists, copy and store them. You can do that by
simply cutting-and-pasting text to email and sending them to
yourself.

> Good luck to you all.

Thanks for the warning. I began taking measures when I first heard the
announcement.
For the present, it will be business as usual here.

It would be great, however, if everyone checked in to the member portion fot the
egroup and made sure their full name appeared. Why?

1. If egroups goes down, it'll help me recreate.
2. It will help me give credit in the playtest credit section of the rulebook.

I find Yahoo! to be very appropriately named.

Jon
