Either way, the stadia is roughly 600 feet. Xenephon says
that the Greeks started their charge three stadia from the enemy; that's
600 yards. They advance, sing the Paean, "attack" their spears (advance
them to the ready?) and break into a dead run. This is not an isolated
instance. (Anabasis 1.8.1Cool. Adding together all of Xenophon's
descriptions, the average charge at a dead run was about 300 yards. It
clearly took many opponents by surprise.

Anyone here besides me ever engage in track & field?

A teen age runner is a champion if he can run 440 yards (quarter
mile) in close to 60 seconds. The 220 is done between 20-30 sec
IIRC. This is with spiked shoes on a high friction track and
swinging both arms freely. Not much of a surprise to see that coming.

Is there any record of how Hoplites learned to run together in a pack
wearing full panoply without tripping each other? I'd say they would
have to go slower than cross country runner speed.

If such a body were running full tilt, I'd say a good tactic would be
to toss your spear underhanded along the ground to trip the oncomers.
In fact I would put an X shaped crossbar on the shaft to hold it up
off the ground.

If your own second rank slammed a shield, at running speed, into your
back, you would be injured. Any insight from ruggers?
