Sheesh, I deliberately include inflammatory language and on get one
person to post? What are y'all, milksops? <<grin>> Perhaps you are
waiting until my series is done and then you are going to point out all
the flaws?
Jaime, I understand why you wrote what you did about missile fire. I
could have included a discussion concerning using dense missile fire in my
first email, but I intend to include that in the email on "troops" and
"tactics". Some of it will probably bleed over into the "metagame" email.
In short, I consider the way you discussed the use of missile fire in
your email to be a "tactical" use that fits within one of the "grand
tactics" that I described in my first email. For example, the way I have
seen you use the Late Imperial Romans in the past fits (in my opinion) in
the "pin and punch" category. The fact that your "pinning" troops fix the
enemy with their missile fire instead of using HTH exclusively does not
invalidate "The Plan". Also, I do consider HC JLS, Sh to be
"shock" troops. The fact that do not hit as hard as the EHC L, B, Sh
(that you also run) or the SHC L likewise does not alter the fact that is
the way you use them.
At Historicon, I used the Patrician Romans (another dense missile
army) with my "screen and attack" plan. The fact that my "screen" used
missile fire to put pressure on the enemy and that some of my
"screen" troops also became my "shock" troops does not alter what "The
Plan" was. It does demonstrate why I called them "grand tactics" and
differentiate, in my mind at least, from how to tactically employ specific
units as part of the coherent whole. Perhaps I am not communicating this
well?

Some quick counterpoints:
1. I've been a victim of Derek (I live near Jacksonville) and his mastery
of Pin and Punch many times. I find the best counter to classic Pin and
Punch armies (LI pin units, shock cav. Punch) is dense missile fire. The LI
or LC units doesn't last long against the dense fire forcing the Punch units
to commit. Maybe this is more of Anti Pin and Punch?
2. "Also, I do consider HC JLS, Sh to be "shock" troops." Take my shock
cav, please! OK, the EHC with L is nice, but HC JLS under Warrior is
road kill waiting to happen.
3. Patrician Roman in the hands of good player is a scary list to face.
All that foot with D and cost effective cav with L. You could go classic
pin and punch with that list or field a lot foot with D for Anti pin and
punch. Which way did you slant your lists?
