To vary the discussion a bit, I would be interested in people's views
regarding how the Hellenistic Greek list(s) should look in Classical
Warrior. I suspect that one overall list would do the trick, with sublists
for Spartans, Achaeans, Aetolians, and others. Personally, I am a bit
distressed by recent list attempts to confine the player to choosing ONLY
pike or thureophoroi, rather than a combination of both. For example, the
Achaean League (my personal research interest) appears to have switched
its line infantry to pikes from a combination of thureophoroi and hopites
in the late 3rd century, but I am convinced they still employed
thureophoroi peltasts (as mercenaries and periokic auxilliaries) and
thorakitai long thereafter. Polybius is unclear as to whether the
thorakitai he describes are HI phalangites or LHI thorakitai. They could
have been either or both. I also believe that Polybius' admiration for the
Achaean cavalry after Philopoemen's training reforms as master of horse
under the strategos Aratus indicates that they should be classed as Reg A
or B, rather than C. In addition, I believe older lists were a bit
underrepresentative of artillery usage (only two light bolt shooters).
Lastly, I believe that as in hoplite Greece, these guys often brigaded
JLS, Sling, and Bow armed psiloi together in skirmishing masses (or units)
and this should be reflected in the lists. Anyone have any other thoughts?
I realize these are not popular tournament armies and probably never will
be, but they're among my favorites to paint and play (love that flamin'
bacon!!)
