being at 5 CPF (1 for the charge, 4 for combat).

>If the Halberdiers follow up, the next bound of
combat, they will be 12@6, or 60 casualties and 3CPF
to the Picts.
The Picts will be 12@4 (Tired and Other foot vs.
Shieldless MI armed with 2HCT. 36 casualties, another
2 CPF to the Halberdiers.
Picts will be disordered, Tired, and have 11CPF.

ME: Check your math. The Picts are still fighting only 9 figures. However,
the factors are: other weapons vs. MI = 3, Javelins +1, Shieldless MI +3, Facing
2HCT -1, Tired -1 for a total of 5. 9@5 = 36 casualties. No change in the
effect but now the math is right.

>Third Bound Halberdiers will again be 12@6, which
would destroy the Picts in Combat.
The Picts would be 9@3, or 23 casualties, which would
be 1 CPF to the Halberdiers, tiring them.

ME: Same thing here. The Picts are actually 9@4, doing 27 casualties. Again,
no change in effect.

ME: But all this example shows is the falacy of trying to fight outnumbered at
the point of attack. If the Picts come in 3 elements wide the first round is
unchanged but during the second round they fight 14@5, doing 56 casualties. The
halberdiers are now tired and disordered. And if the Pict unit is 8E, it would
not be disordered. In the third round the Picts do 14@5 while the halberdiers
do 12@3 and the battle swings in the other direction. And in round 4, the
halberdiers rout.

ME: In this matchup, the Picts cost 97 points and the Halberdiers cost 90
points. But it is only a snapshot of a much bigger picture. That makes the
discussion of matchups like this academic. Generalship is what is important
here. The key is to get superior combat power at the point of attack.
