PostPosted: Mon Apr 10, 2006 10:02 pm    Post subject: PointCon AAR from Mr. Anonymous

First off, thanks to Ewan for running the event, I had a great
time, even if my tactical acumen decided to take the day off.

The Mr. Anonymous joke came up when Ewan kept wanting to announce
results, starting from the bottom, whereupon the Peanut gallery
(i.e. me!) would shout out "The top 3 would be just fine thanks!"

Since PointCon was the first event I ever played solo Warrior at
a year ago, I decided to "go back to the Future" and play Sicilian
Hohenstaufen again, a list I had sworn to never muck with again
after many painful trials.

After this weekend, I can safely say that I am back OFF the wagon
of the great 6th Crusade Sicilians. ;>

Since we as a group were in a "fun, non competitive" mode, I
decided to forgo the usual flipping through list books to check out
my opponents armies - this proceeded to bite me in the ass for my
first 2 games. Oh well...:)

Game 1: Matt Kolmer, Early Crusader States

I got a lousy terrain setup, where my open spaces decided to not
show up. Matt in the meantime rolled up a couple of 6's for his
hill placement and managed to set up Fortress Crusader, putting a
line of Steep hills at the mid line, with another hill on his back
left flank. Fortunately, I got an Anywhere for my last brush and
managed to at least inconvenience his close order Xbow from setting
up on the central hill by plunking my brush straight on top.

Matt settled in to wait with his Knights in the gap between the
central hill and the back left flank hill - he had MI LTS and MI JLS
set in front of the knights. I approached his left (my right) with
the bulk of my force, with my knights and SHC close together, and my
bowmen spaced out. I had a small skirmisher force out on my left to
make sure nothing silly came rumbling off the hills - Matt made a
concerted effort to push that side, but an ill timed impetous LC
charge left his LC hanging out in the wind in a rally forward
position to get shot up and forced to recall. After that, the rest
of the game consisted of me slowly shoving his unsupported LC back
with my LI and LC.

My catastrophic error came when I decided to move up and dismount
to wade into the LTS, without checking how far back Matt's knights
were. His LTS went into column, up came the knights (Irr A no less!
That threw my math off for holding and counter punching, especially
when he rolled up 2 TWICE - that's what you get for not reading the
opponents list), and my EHI were off and running in the rout. 5-1
to Matt.

What exacerbated the game was the fact that my 2 flank marches
never showed up, where I kept rolling low for Arrivals, and 6's for
Initiative. Bloody annoying....

I felt at the time that I had not concentrated my bowmen enough,
so I resolved to concentrate them more next time, and keep my
Knights back.

Game 2: Jim Biscignani (sp?), Greek Hoplites

So I went into this fight thinking "concentrate the bowmen". So
I did exactly that.

Terrain again bit me in the butt, with my one of my opens again
not showing up. Jim meanwhile got his 2 flank woods, which allowed
him to go wall to wall with his hoplites - ugly.

I had my bowmen on my left, the knights bunched up on my right.
During the early marching, I moved up the bow, and proceeded to
march my knights behind my bowmen, doing a massive wheel left (45
degrees each in march turn 3 and 2), finally settling in behind.
The Peanut Gallery (i.e. Ewan, Jevon, Bill, and anyone else looking)
all had a good yuck at my "Sideways going Knights".

As I prepared to begin shooting in bound 2, Jim pointed out (kind
of apologetically) that hoplites ignore shooting until 3 Cpf. What
the %&R*%*#&%^$&*@^!!!!!! So now I had a bunch of ineffectual
bowmen camped out in front of my knights. As Jim approached as fast
as possible, I was left trying to counter and retire out of his way,
to no avail - the dice didn't like me, and let me know it. I ended
up in a charge or be charged situation, sent in the Knights as
scattered units instead of boot-to-boot (because of bowmen in their
way), whereupon I found out that Hoplites always fight 2 ranks.
Again, "what the ^@!&@%#%*!!!" 8@3 is different from 6@3, as I
shortly found out......

Jim proceeded to rout a couple of units, shook another, and I
basically conceeded at this point, rather than be a weenie and try
and stall him out for the rest of the time, when we could instead
relax and watch other games. 4-0 to Jim.

Game 3: Ed Kollmer, Andalusian (w/ El Cid!)

At this point, my brain was mushy, so I was glad to get such a
congenial opponent. We were both relaxed and laughing at this point
as we set up. Our game involved lots of bad dice rolling and
general good natured-ness.

For once, the terrain dice smiled on me, and I got my opens to
clear up the middle. Ed's hill didn't show up, and I stuck my brush
in his back field.

I set up with bowmen CLEARLY out of the way of the Knights and
SHC. I forced march all my LC and LI across the front, where they
proceeded to romp around and be annoying to the Andalusians the
entire game - exactly what I envisioned when I wrote the list.

Ed had a strong desire to push his right flank, and I was left to
just dance around in front of him and give thanks many times that
close order foot only approach 2 inches. On his left flank, his big
LC JLS,sh unit moved up, and got caught out when my Reg LC decided
to turn and move 200paces. He got shot up during prep, and evaded
my flank charge with a normal roll. At this point, a West Point
cadet had wandered in, and had been engaging both Ed and myself in
explaining the Warrior. So after Ed evaded, I said "This is where
my Reg cav's speed and discipline helps, because now the only way I
fail to catch him is if I roll short."

Yep, you guessed it, I rolled a 2 on the average die. I was
sitting at the time, so I saw the die roll, and just dropped my head
to the table, muttering "Why?" Matt was seated next to me, playing
against the Byzantines, and laughing saying "You KNEW you screwed
yourself when you said 'I only fail on a short roll". I couldn't
help but laugh a little at that, and we gamed on.

I pushed my Knights forward, while Ed, spooked by some truly
crappy luck in the earlier rounds, kept his line back and waited to
see what I did. I managed to punch a hole in his line through some
shaken LI of his, and executed a Reg turn with my SHC, to come
charging down his line at some MI LTS.

At this point, El Cid! heroically turned to face off my SHC. He
charged into the SHC path, forcing me to turn to charge El Cid.

Whereupon El Cid rolled down big, and the SHC rolled up 1. I had
broken his charge! I did 3 cpf, but not twice as many, so he got
shoved back disordered.

What happened next was the rest of the game, where a BIG bru-haha
churned up in the middle, where the rest of El Cid's Knights faced
off with my knights, while my LMI bow shot up Knights and Ed's
CinC. The middle was a big mess, and I managed to rescue my own
CinC from an ignoble death by charging some LMI bowmen into his
knights flank.

Meanwhile, El Cid kept getting pushed back disordered, but
absolutely
REFUSED
TO
BREAK.

Given his precarious location, it would have taken one "1", and
the I would have had a great chance to cause some real damage, as
his routing unit went running down his line. Alas, it was not meant
to be.

Which is truly ironic - because that is what SHOULD have
happened. As I said before, my brain was mushy, so I totally forgot
about section 10.4 Death of a General.

When Ed rolled down -4 on his charge, El Cid...DIED. His unit
would have broken and gone routing down the main battle line,
causing waver tests galore.

And I totally forgot about it.

So what REALLY happened was...

--------------------------------------------

Rodrigo turned to look. The enemy German Mercs had routed the
local conscripts and were poised to turn the flank. Not if HE could
help it! Rallying his guards around him, El Cid! trotted swiftly
down the line, until calling out to his men.... "For Bivar, Spain,
and GOD! CHARGE!!!!"

The opposing forces closed on each other, until with a mighty
CRASH!, they met.

As the Spaniards reeled back from the charge, El Cid! was seen
slumping in the saddle, impaled upon a lance, and horribly
mutilated. A terrible cry started up "El Cid! is DEAD!!" when
suddenly (cue up Monty Python/Holy Grail music):

"I'm not dead yet! - tis only a scratch...."

"But sir, you've got a lance through the heart!"

" 'Tis only a flesh wound! "

(one of the enemy SHC) "But you're missing both your arms !!"

(El Cid) "Oh, so your scared now? Come on, lets fight! Chicken!"

(The crowd roars) "EL CID! EL CID!"
------------------------------------------------

In retrospect, I'm glad I forgot about 10.4, as the game was much
more enjoyable and hard fought, with the Cid holding out against the
odds until the very end.

At the end of the game, Ed & I shook hands and laughed some more
after counting up our 1-1 draw. It was a truly great way to end an
enjoyable Saturday of gaming.

It is only poetic justice that El Cid's dead body was encased in his
armor and propped up on his horse to fool everyone into thinking he
was still alive!

OK
I must complete the saga of the Cid.Everything that Asif said is true. He is a
man of impeccable veracity(means very truthful). However , he left out a few
small details. It is true that the Cid did recieve a mortal( and even fatal)
wound(means he will probably die). His continued fearless, valiant and defiant
response, struck fear into the hearts of the German mercenaries.Chants were
heard from the Assyrian table and even from the distance Scots Common and
Hoplite tables of "Cid,Cid,Cid,Cid" (background music :Wagner's ride of the
Valkyrie) .
The Rest is history as they say.
The CID
PS: Asif! Matt was only trying to help you. You have to be nice to the dice.
PSS: What was really ironic, was that the CID rolled unreliable . He had to
redeem himself.
Actually, I think our group was indeed the loudest and dare say the most jovial
at the convention. there was a steady stream of spectators coming in to see what
was going on and in the words of Matt(after looking around at the other events"
I think we are the convention."
Till next time Asif! I look forward to it.Wink))

Back in the day, when dinosaurs ruled the earth - Jake and I among them -
Point Con filled a level of Thayer Hall....

This last is certainly true to an extent - until the evening (when some
cadets were freed up to attend), there were probably as many of us as of
everyone else together. Too bad for the Con, but no problem for us
(although the $15/head entry fee was pretty damn steep, and we had some
discussion of possibly running a house-con with catered food and prizes,
for the same cost..)

I think we all left wanting more - and Ed's description of El Cid, next to
the corridor, was a great attraction for passers-by Smile.

My favorite visitor was the guy who came in and said, "Well, this looks
