Jon,
When do hills aid visability? I ask this as the following scenario
occured at my last comp. A LMI unit 2 ranks deep is sitting with the
front rank on the flat in front of a hill and the rear rank still on
the hill. An enemy unit is 120 paces away and about 40 paces directly
behind that is an enemy chariot unit. The enemy unit shot the LHI for
2cpf and I elected to waver test (Reg B's. Why not?) I rolled a two.
My opponent claimed I was uneasy because the LMI unit could see the
chariots behind the shooters within 240 paces. However, he shot at me
without being partly "target higher".
Questions.
1. Can the REAR rank see the chariots over the top of the shooting
unit due to it still being on the hill? ie at a higher elevation.
2. If the answer to point 1 is "yes", should the target gain a part
"target higher" bonus due to the shooters shooting at the target
rather than the front rank?

Visibility is determined by (body of) troops, not by 'ranks'. In your example,
Steve, the LMI could not see the chariot (provided I understand your
description).

I'm not trying to answer a question here, but... :)
I hope that the answer is that the rear rank can not see the chariots and be
dis-ordered. Two reasons:
1. The rear rank is within 40paces of friendly elements and therefore can not
see over them (not exactly but something akin to 12.42).
2. We have played that the front edge of the front rank counts the whole body
as being in the terrain (woods, brush, hills, etc.) for purposes of movement
and visibility. If this isn't true, please advise ASAP, as it will change
our game.
In a similarly related issue, we've had some instances where 1/2 of the front
rank is not charging uphill at halted opponents and the other 1/2 is charging
uphill. In this quandry, we said as long as some of the element base is on
the hill then the whole unit is not charging up it. This is also similar to
charging down a gentle slope, which we also said since some of the chargers
are on the hill, then they get the plus. Again, if this is not the intent of
the rules, please advise ASAP.
