Hello;
Yesterday was my 3rd game of FW. I took the field with 25mm Parthians
(brand new army in their first appearance) against Dale Shanek's
battle-tested and veteran Later Carthaginians. OK, I got smoked, but
we both had a lot of fun starting to learn the differences between
Warrior and TOG. I had so much fun that earlier today I placed an
order for enough troops (Old GLory 25's) to run as either Camillan or
Polybian Romans in FW.
WHich brings me to my point. As near as I can tell from looking at
my old WRG and Osprey books, troops painted as Camillans ought to be
able to double as Polybians and vice versa, at least as far as
legionaries are concerned. The only really different troops would be
the light troops, and perhaps not even them. Can anybody out there
see any objection to such an approach ? thanks- dave lauerman

>Very glad you enjoyed yourself. How long did the game take? What were
your thoughts on balance? What worked for the LC? What worked (or, as
it sounds like, didn't) work for the Parthians?

>No objection whatsoever. In fact, if the figures have chain coats
(instead of those metal plates on straps), you can use the legionairies
in the Marian period as well. Or as Imitation legionaires in some of
the other period lists, etc.

Scott- the game took a bit over 2 1/2 hours, with both of us saying
it will be a lot less next time. Balance seemed OK. 2 units of horse
archers were able to keep the Jumbos pretty much in check. We traded
LC units, one for one. My cataphracts were committed too hastily by
the idiot in command 8^) against an 8E unit of MI, LTS, Sh, which
they beat, but not quickly enough to prevent their flanks from being
compromised. In the meantime, the elephants could've been exhausted
by bow-fire if I could've kept the Spanish LMI from leaving the
bushes to support them, but the too-early cataphract charge removed
any threat to the Spaniards and out they came to save the pachyderms.
All in all, I was pleased with the Parthians, and felt that with a
more patient approach they could have easily won. The LC must be
allowed time to wear down the opposition before the Heavy Metal (or
in this case, some metal and some Heavy Felt)boys are sent in to
clean up the mess.
A few weeks ago I bought a copy of a Classical (2nd Punic War,
actually) Diplomacy game, which I hope to use as a game engine for a
Punic War campaign, using FW armies as the basic units and fighting
out the battles instead of using regular Diplomacy rules. After the
last 2 battles, I think this will be fun- dave lauerman
