PostPosted: Wed Jul 25, 2001 8:08 pm    Post subject: Recall Move Question

For some reason, I am currently not getting some posts on the egroup sent to
my mailbox. I missed the following question on Recall moves when it was
originally sent.

> Nowhere do the rules (at least that I can find) specify if the
> amount of movement in a recall move (which you may recall is
> variable) is mandatory.>>

This is not true, see rule below:

6.112 Variable Moves. The following are Variable Moves:
· Evades
· Charges at evading or routing troops
· Pursuits
· Break-throughs
· Break-offs
· Rout Moves
· Recall Moves
Variable moves have the same base distance as other tactical moves. In
addition, throw one D5 if the body is regular, D6 if irregular. Bodies that
score 1 or 2 deduct 40 paces from their move, and mounted troops scoring 5 or
6 can choose to add or deduct 80 paces unless charging impetuously, when they
must add. It is possible for a variable move deduction, particularly in
difficult terrain, to reduce a body's move distance to zero paces.
A body's current tactical order may also influence the variable portion of
the move (4.51).

Recalls, like other variable moves, start with the basic tactical move
distance and possibly add or deduct a variable component as described in
6.112.

<<The only mandate is that LI within 40 paces
> of steady foot must make a recall move. >>

Of course this is NOT the only time a body makes a recall. See 6.36 for a
list of when a body must or may make a recall move.

<<From the way the rules are
> currently written you could argue any of the following (the key word
> here is ARGUE)
>
> 1. a recall move is some finite distance between 0 and the maximum
> move determined by the variable move rules.>>

This is true.

<< 2. a recall move must end with the LI 40 paces from steady foot.>>

????????????????? I see no rational argument for this. This requirement is
not in the rulebook. LI can choose to recall rather than waver test to stay
within 40p of steady foot, but nowhere does it say a recall move must end
there.

<< 3. a recall move must be exactly the amount determined by the
> variable move rules. >>

The variable move rules do determine the distance of a variable move. Yup,
sure do.

<< The rules are NOT unambigious. May I suggest a rewrite in the style
> of Squad Leader and Empires in Arms.>>

Hmmmm, what style uses case numbers out to three decimal places and lists
in-rule exceptions and cross-references? Warrior is one. Those are two
others. Don't get the comment.

<<Yes it is dull and hard to write
> this way, but you end with an easily referenced and easily understood
> set of rules. >>

Yup. Agree with all that.

<<> I guess working in a law office for 5 years has affected me more than
> I thought.>>

Hmmm, someone who works in a law office and talks about rules, that would
make you a ........?

All in fun, but you need to read 6.112 and 6.36 again.

Jon
