I have been reading about all your recuitment efforts and I would
like to tell you how I was recruited 10 years ago and some of the
memorable times I have had playing.
I was at my regular gaming club at Ed Kollmer's and his son Matt was
the host of the group. After everybody had left the three of us Ed,
Matt and myself remained talking about games in general and Ed piped
up about "How would like to learn Ancients and go to HistoriCon next
month" to which I said "sure, I would love to, but you have to teach
me." Which they did. They did it in four weeks of intense small scale
battles, some 600 point Roman vs Byzantine battles and even Ted Furey
got involved and if the Kollmers didn't have game time Ted would try
and teach me a little. Since we only had one month and the theme of
that year was Dark Ages so I concentrated on learning 25mm Normans. I
took Normans in the Theme and Open and had a great time eventhough I
got slaunched. I will always remember the Open battle I had with
Jevon's Tuets. I was getting killed but Jevon was being nice enough
to point out what I needed to do and at that early in learning I
really appreciated it. Also during that game Scott the Ump Ho came
over and Asked how I was doing and I said "I was having fun".
HistoriCon that year led to a whirlwind of tourney's anyone I thought
I could reach and had at least a weeks notice I could get to. I mean
I hit Havoc when TOG was still allowed in Boston and won the
Sportsman award, PointCon, Woe to the Defeated. Woe to the Defeated
had one of the most memorable Finals I have witnessed with Jamie
McGlaughin-Fish's Scot's Isles Highlander's vs Alan Isaebel's Anglo-
Norman which went back and forth with Jamie finally prevailing
because he supposedly had the luck of the Scots with him. I miss
Jamie's 15mm Thistle and Rose miniatures.
I have played for 10 years and only have one army. Why? Because I
will go to a convention buy some figs and get psyched to play when we
get home and then it never happens because of conflicting schedules.
I probably have three years of gaming experience in battle mostly at
Cons. Living in Maine has provided me with some time to want to paint
up an army so I am looking for suggestions for 15mm swiss figures.
This last year I finally beat Bill Low, now this you have to
understand every Con I go to in the NorthEast Bill and I get paired
up, and he has always been a great teacher but I would always end up
losing to him. So when I met him at Crusades in the first round with
a borrowed army I have never played before (Hellenistic Greek) I all
that confident the result wouldn't be the same as always. Well it was
a Great battle and I ended up winning 5-2 I think (Bill you can
correct me if you want.) I also had a draw and a loss but that day
more than anything helped get excited about playing again because it
really is no fun just playing at tournaments and getting killed, I
really wish I had more practice and I am trying to get another army
so I can start recruiting in ME.
sorry if I rambled but that was my experience learning the game.
Tim
