In actual games are there many instances in which the maneuver
advantages of Reg cavalry actually come into play? Do the regulars
get to use their superior abilities, or are they just Irr cavalry
that have a hard time charging impetuously?

John,
I can tell you that in virtually every game that I have played where
I have used regular troops the ability to make a full move AND a formation
change has been critical at some point. Does that answer your question?

Yes it does. Do you then think Reg cavalry are worth the points?

Personally, reg cav are at their best when there's plenty of room to
maneuver. That means a 1200 point game in 25's or any game in 15mm
for me then. In most 25mm games, armies go across the entire length
of the board, especially if Damour is playing. He and I have had some
classic battles of my cav vs his foot. Not exactly what you asked
about, but I think it still demonstrates some capabilities.
Initially I just charged in using the commanders ability to enable
all my reg cav to go impetuous. Then just hang on the rest of the
game. 50/50 Then, I realized that rather than face his charges head
on, why not out maneuver him so I got my charge off and he had to
take it at the halt. Close to 240, wait until he moved forward 120,
then counter back 40. Much easier with regs. Much better results,
too, but was still dying in counter attack waves. Then, I tried the
second approach with feints towards, then marching around behind to
come up and bunch up in one area. Lots of regs going in in one area
meant fewer casualties to me and I could even aggressively attack his
second line.
Reg LC is the ultimate tie down troop if B class. 1 or 2 units can
tie down the entire flank, countering just out of danger each and
every turn. Turnbull is the ole master at that trick. Again, if
there's room, I've seen Robert easily get on the flank of units and
attack when he didn't stand a chance head on. You can't do that with
ir-regs.
The choice probably depends on the type of player you are - no need
for regs if you simply go forward and crush.

This is a great help. Since I don't own a single 25mm figure, it
also speaks directly to my situation.
