The rules allow one to replace ranks in combat if you are pushed back.

They also make the statement that the front ranks are assumed to fall back
through the back ranks.

Question:

Does this mean that only the front rank can fall back?

One example would be for a unit in 3 ranks; front rank spear, middle rank bow,
last rank spear. The unit is pushed back. Can the middle rank of bow fall back
and make the 3rd rank the new 2nd rank?
