The concerns raised about the ability to have new lines of HTW
against an opponent raises a thought for me...
The Roman interpenetration of lines occurred (according to my
reading) when the Hastati (first line) became tired/fatigued after
fighting - and were replaced by a fresh line which could carry on the
struggle.
I have also been wondering about the application of the tactic in
light of the standard two rank deep unit; important in game terms,
but each maniple/cohort was only about 6-8 men deep.
What about a rule which only permits the exhange of lines with a
fatigued unit? Or pehaps already disordered unit? This would seem
to reflect the real purpose or implementation (as far as we can
guess) of the mysterious Roman maneuver.
Also, has anyone considered a deployment in Axis Duplex or Axis
Triplex, with 6-8 stand lines in 1 rank? It seems to me a proper,
full strength Polybian legion would have 8 stands (800 men) of
velites in one rank, followed by 8 stands (1600 men) of Hastati in a
a second rank, followed by 8 stands (1600 men) of Princeps in the
third rank, with a 4th rank of 4 stands of Triari (800 men) in
reserve.
Thoughts?

Dave, this is also my understanding of Polybian and
indeed Camillan (just add more classes).
However, the only games that reward such tactics are
DBM and Warmonger. DBM, however, immediately takes
the reward away by forcing generals to determines if
they are vascilating every 15 minutes. And when
pushing the second line forward to replace missing
elements, they often get caught up in pushbacks and
other mechanical bullcrap that ruins the original
intent/scope of the game. Alas for all gaming, for
the rules lawyers eventually appear to "clarify" :)
