At what stage of the bound do you need to decide that a unit in an
optional rally situation is actually going to rally?
Yesterday we had a situation where a unit was disordered by bow-fire.
At what point does the rallying process actually start.
As a unit that is rallying cannot charge - but a disordered unit can.
My opponent has a choice to spend a turn in rally or charge
disordered.
Is he required to specify that the unit is rallying or can he decide
what to do whenever he likes?
Thanks - Gerard

<<At what stage of the bound do you need to decide that a unit in an optional
rally situation is actually going to rally?>>
Since the primary 'optional' rally situation is to recover from rally-cured
disorder, you must not do anything that would interfere with rallying before the
End Phase (when unsteady troops complete rallying). The number one thing that
typically keep a guy from rallying such troops to recover them from disorder is
the desire (or need..lol) to move. So you are effectively 'deciding' to rally
in any move phase you choose not to move the body.
<<Yesterday we had a situation where a unit was disordered by bow-fire.

At that moment.
<<As a unit that is rallying cannot charge - but a disordered unit can.>>
True. But remember thata steady unit completes rally at the end of approaches
and could therefore charge. You are talking specifically about an unsteady body
rallying.
<<My opponent has a choice to spend a turn in rally or charge

whenever he likes?>>
He is considered to be 'rallying' up until the end phase or the moment he
chooses to do something that prevents rallying, whichever is first.
