Hu-ah BB#332!
Had to blow spider webs off most of Russ before they could play. Santacon
was an excellent time. It was a real blast meeting such a great bunch of guys
in San Antonio. Lots of good sportsmanship and some serious paint jobs. I
have an army of Greek Hoplites, but they would be too embarrassed to come out of
the tool box after what the Russ told them I recommend the trip to San
Antonio in February. Looking forward to next go with Warrior.

Duane to Todd "Orders, I don't need any stinking orders!"
Todd to Duane "Should have gotten my Kats out of the way." (Referring to
Duane catching Todd's Kats flatfooted.)
Bill to Todd "and the pigs explode" (as Knights receive a charge from
incendiary pigs)
Michael to Todd "Let me should you why you don't do that!
Michael to Everyone "Next time I will respect Harlan."
Chris Tebo "Hundred Year War English (only cause he can't make up his mind
what army!)"
Game Summaries:
Bill Chriss:
Oh man, you expect me to remember? Round One: The Greek Kid and his flamin
bacon brigade face off against John "Big Daddy" Garlic (or is that Garlits)
and his Russ. A massive (400 pt.) Varangian flank march comes in, but with
two infantry armies, it's mostly a dance. Russ win
2-1. Round Two: The Greek Kid vs. David "The Beast" Beeson and his Serbians.
Historically, it's beginning to look like I should have brought my Medieval
Greeks, not the Hellenistics. For the first time ever, I get my pigs
launched on a disordered knight unit. Bad waiver dice for Dave. Impetuous
Serbian lancers try charging my Hellenistic boltshooters. Ouch! Don't
think Dave'll try that one again. Still it's mostly rope-a-dope due to 3
hour time limit. After spotting Dave th burnt pigs and half my flank march
still wandering off-board, its another draw, like 142-110, Beast on top.
Round 3: The Greek Kid vs. Big Todd and the Nike BYz (clearly should have
brought my late Byzantines for historical accuracy against these three
matchups). Again get off the pigs against cav. Yee-hah! Then Artillery
shoots'em up. Tarantine flankers come on, get behind'em and the rout's on.
Get out the Windex. A good time had by all. Finally figured out who should
hold the pigs.
Chris Tebo:
Chris vs. Greg (Round 1):
Get to face the projected winner in game one... nice! Lose every approach
initiative and still manage to lose. Make every counter except the
last bound. Make every morale check except the last bound. Is there a
trend here?
Battle was going my way but I managed to pull defeat out of the jaws of
victory. Gotta press the attack with more units when an advantage appears.
Seems like I always make this mistake at my first game of a tournament.
Nothing like being rusty and trying to play the area's top player Oh it
didn't help that I crowded another flank with unneeded troops. Nothing like
a flood of enemy Reg A knights, close order spear and Oarsmen to thin out
your over-crowded problems!
Only consolation is that Greg states that I am the first one to EVER break
his marine Reg B LHI, 2HCT, CB, Sh unit. Great; that and $3.00 gets you a
cup of coffee at Starbucks!
(Vs. Greg and Knights of St. John or those who stand behind the forward
deployed walls!)
Chris vs. John (Round 2):
Look at all those Russians... Say, what are those Varangians doing streaming
out on the flank of SHK's?
He had a lovely flank charge on one of my SHK units. (see what happens when
you don't play enough or pay enough attention?!) My great morale rolls
finally met the law of averages and I proceed to shake with the Irr B SHK
unit. When this unit routs, I manage to pass on unsupported C units... go
figure!
One flank march from him didn't come in until last bound; no effect on
outcome of game.
Russ MI with Jls don't like English SHK charging them. Loss of one unit
caused two other large units to shake. This was the major swing in what
might have been a lot closer contest. Managed to win 4 - 2.
John's a great guy and it was wonderful that he could drive the 3.5 hours to
the tournament.
Chris vs. David (Round 3):
Serbians? Who the heck plays Serbians? Say, who put all these woods in my
deployment area?
Geez, bombards and organ guns on my flanks... oh my! My, those troops look
familiar. What's this, being shot at by my own troops? Damnable mercenary
scum! Serves me right for lending out artillery. Note to self, lend out
lead but NOT artillery!
Terrain actually ended up hurting both sides in this contest. We both made
all 4 terrain rolls. He rolled a hill, brush and 2 woods. I rolled a major
water feature, two woods and a brush (which I placed on the hill... lucky
for me as he had two artillery units that would have used the hill to their
great advantage!
Close game actually. We both made some rules blunders and small tactical
errors. The law of averages caught up with me once again on the last bound.
I managed to pass all wavers from the artillery but once again failed a
critical morale test in the last bound.
Greg Regets:
Game 1 - English 100YW (Chris Tebo) vs. The Holy Religion, The Sacred Order
of St. John of the Hospital
God's opponent had many longbows, many longbows indeed. Prayer decided that
foot would fight foot, and knight would fight knight this day. God's light
shined on the infantry, who came through in crunch time ... all but those
degenerate sinners, the Holy Marines. The only holy they had was the holes
put in them by longbowmen. They owe me twenty pushups and ten Novena's!
Game 2 - Arab Scum (Kelly Wilkinson) vs, The Holy Religion, The Sacred Order
of St. John of the Hospital
God determined that both sides would spend the entire battle rolling way up
in prep/support shooting, and way down in combat. As the sun set on the
field, we determined that 65% of the forces on the field had been in combat
for at least four bounds, with virtually no result.
Game 3 - Later Crusaders (Harlan Garrett) vs. The Holy Religion, The Sacred
Order of St. John of the Hospital
God delivered to his servants, an army we could actually shoot with some
prejudice; and we did! God has a sense of humor, and never tires of seeing
what happens when brave SHK, supported by crossbows (which is why they are
so brave), match up with EHK, supported by air.
Championship Game - Arab Dogs of the Desert (Kelly Wilkinson) vs, The Holy
Religion, The Sacred Order of St. John of the Hospital
God grants his Holy army, the benefit of many generals, all of them blessed
with spiritual awareness (along with prompting points and the flexibility of
fluid command orders). The advantages to be gleaned only come up about every
third or fourth battle. Fortunately, God determined that this would be one
of those battles.
Harlan Garrett
Game 1: Later Crusaders vs. 100-year War English (Duane)
This was a slow developing game. The English were very quick to set up a
bowline and my archers were slow to show. Once the shooting started, it was
not very decisive and neither side got the advantage. Charges late in the
game were the only points scored.
Game 2: Later Crusaders vs. Carolingian Franks (Michael)
This was a very quick in your face game. Michael and I did not hesitate to
mix it up. Both of us issued Attack Orders to all of our commands and let
the changes be impetuous. Unfortunately for Michael, HCs is no match for
supported EHKs. Both of us committed to massive mounted changes on bound
two and there was not much left to charge after that. Michael center was
the first to break and shortly there after the battle was won.
Game 3: Later Crusaders vs. Knights of Saint John (Greg)
I had Greg right where I wanted him, then we deployed and the game was over!
Championship Game: Later Crusaders vs. Russ (John)
The Russ gave me every opportunity to win, but I insisted on losing. The
Later Crusaders kept getting into traffic jams. Next time, bring the
Traffic Police. We played a very conservative game with never side wanted
to give up any points and the final out come was determined by a half-point.
John Garlic
Game 1 - Hellenistic Greeks (Bill Chriss) vs. Varangian and Russ
My first Warrior game. It was GREAT to be pushing lead after such a long
hiatus (10 years). Bill's Greeks looked awesome. I spread across entire
table while he concentrated forces on one terrain congested side.
Fortunately my ~400 point flank march came in on bound two over there. Most
of my slow-slogging pedestrians never got to the fight.
Lesson learned - Mass on the objective.
Lesson learned - LMI cannot hide in brush for an ambush
Lesson learned - Not sure I like the three hour round, but perhaps need to
push forces a little faster if attacking.
Game 2 - English 100YW (Chris Tebo) vs. Varangian and Russ
My first encounter with knights was not a pretty sight. Despite my attempts
to clutter the board with terrain, Chris quickly identified the weakness in
my pedestrian horde. I was amazed how quickly a small number of knights can
ride down a large number of MI JLS Sh Varangians. The only bright point was
the Varangian axemen ambush pounding on the flank of some SHK.
Lesson learned - Bring more of the longer pointy sticks next time facing
knights.
Game 3 - Franks (Mike Forbes) vs Varangian and Russ
This game was the height of aggression. Mike's Franks came on like
gang-busters. We met in a long line just on my side of the center line. I
had taken the Bulgar option and was able to hold my own in the cavalry
battle that ensued.
Lesson learned - Bulgar HC L B Sh in four element units are pretty tough.
Game 4 - Later Crusaders (Harlan Garrett) vs. Varangian and Russ
Great way to spend Sunday morning. Pecheneg heavy Russ faced off with
Pechenegs on right, Russ in middle, and Varangians on left. Kept Varangian
spearmen (crushed by Chris on Saturday) off to left away from knightly
types. Stupid Pechenegs did very well in LC skirmish and Pecheneg Wagon
Defenders (sans wagons) were deadly. Cavalry skirmished throughout. Ended
just as clash of knights and Russ began. Almost bit dust when Pecheneg
General failed counter and had to sit with rear end open for LC charge.
Fortunately enough other stupid Pechenegs hanging around to missile LC and
force waiver (failed).
Lesson learned - Need to be more aggressive and learn to attack with Russ.
Lesson learned - Avoid waver tests and counters whenever possible.
Lesson learned - LMI bows very hard to approach.
Kelly Wilkinsen:
First round - (nasty kiniggits) I had a very tough game with Dave Beeson who
Ran Bombard crews that rolled up 3 several times and the up 2 results were
horrible as well! Close win for me and it looked like it would be a defeat
for a while as Dave is a very wily opponent.
Second round -(Knights of Saint John) Very close game with Greg Regets!
Actually according to Greg a squeaker by 1 point for me! Any victory
against Greg is a great victory PERIOD. The interesting thing in this
battle is that we had over 21 units in contact and still couldn't get anyone
to die! lol!
Third round - Duane Nagel and Fortress Europa! Duane channeled my Forces to
the center where he had a hill and a weakly defended left flank. I moved up
the hill and he charged into my well ordered Arab foot Heroes (Reg D MI LTS,
Sh 1/3 B) who promptly murdered a general and caused numerous waiver tests
that Dwayne failed. Many Christians were converted as Henry V became the
slave boy to Abdullah Alla Sleezeballah! By the way, Duane's nasty stories
were hilarious especially because they are true! His friend certainly has
an interesting girlfriend. . . !
Finals Round - (Knights of Saint John) Greg forced marched and pinned me in
my end of the table while simultaneously sailing troops down the major water
feature I placed onto my left flank. This one was a very close game with
neither player giving much up. In the last bound of the game, there was a
general charge across the whole frontage, which was cool, but little was
killed either way. Victory to Greg! Hip Hip...Hooray!

NEXT TOURNAMENT:
Saint Valentine's Day Massacre (February 28-29, 2004)
