Hi Scott,

I have always wondered why late Swiss, expressly late merc Swiss, do not have
the option to uparmor to EHI. The museum armor and wood cuts seem to support the
upgrade.

If any were to qualify for LEHI status, as do the Japanese, then I believe that
the later Swiss would.

Ed

Where were you back in 2003 when I asked this question. Here's a
copy of it and check out the link. ;)

Cruising the internet I found this interesting link. I wonder what
the armor in the lower picture would be classified as. . . or is it
an accurate picture of Swiss soldiers? Oh well, here is the link. . .

These pictures have been available for some time, as they were lifted from
Osprey books Men at Arms series, Swiss at War, published in 1979.

I would say the artist G.A. Embleton also has a case for his excellent
paintings being pirated.

I suggest everyone read the text that talks about the armor as well.

As I am currently painting up a Swiss army, the thought of LEHI
pikemen is an exciting one.
Unfortunately, I think the list researchers got it right when they
went no higher than LHI.
Everything I have read ( espescially as late as the Burgundian wars )
indicates that the majority of Swiss were unarmoured. Even those who
did wear armour, the majority did not wear enough to clarify as LEHI.
I think the heavier armour is something that did not become widespread
amongst the Swiss until the early 1500's. By this time they were
operating mostly outside Switzerland and their speed of movement is
not as marked compared our period. They would probably class better as
EHI by this time.
The lack of huge casualties to bow/crossbow armed troops during our
period is more a credit to their highly effective skirmish screens
than armour. Unfortunately, I don't think there is any way under the
rules to properly emulate this. It's going to be fun trying though!!!
