Shield was fun. Played Marion Roman with the new list rules and tied for last.
These new list rules give the Leg staying power, but due to the lack of good
shock cav, it is hard to project force aggressively with them.

I am pleased with these new Roman list rules over all. I think they do a good
job of highlighting both the strength and weaknesses of the Roman army of this
period. The army does well against foot, but has problems against a combination
of both good foot and good shock cav. This is a reasonable outcome as the
Romans soon added their own catapharact shock cav to compensate in the Imperial
period.

I do not expect to win many games with them in out of period matches, but no
longer feel like total road bump when I do face these out of period armies.

As a side note, I have a 12 year old son. As I was playing in the WAB
tournament Sunday, he wanted to play also. After only reading through the
rules, playing his first game of WAB, playing in his first tournament, and
playing with a loner army, he placed 3rd in a field of 20 with 2 decisive wins
and 1 loss.

Ed's and mine game (Marian Roman vs Early Imperial Roman) was kind of
interesting. While there was some inconclusive preliminary skirmishing on the
flanks the main action took place in the center where the Marian elephants,
after routing a unit of Syrian archers (Irr C LI B), converted into a EIR Reg B
Cohort of Auxilia while to their right, 5 EIR Legionary (16 fig) Cohorts faced
off 6 Marian Legionary (16 fig) Cohorts. The Auxilia recoiled the elephants
while the opposing Legionaries charged each other. In anticipation of a long
drawn out foot combat both sides had deployed their Cohorts to take full
advantage of the new Roman infantry rules, unfortunally in the first Cohort vs
Cohort fight the Reg C Marian rolled down 2 while the EIR (who were Reg B, not
that it mattered) rolled up 1 resulting in the Marian's routing. This triggered
a chain reaction of failed waver tests (I imagine we have all been here
before.....) resulting in the EIR winning the battle. So we never got to
see how the new Roman infantry rules really worked in a Cohort vs Cohort
fight.

One conclusion we did come to was that it was proably worthwhile to upgrade
your Legionaries to Reg B to minimize the effect of down rolls (especially
considering the small size of the average Cohort and the large amount of damage
that charging Legionaries and pikes blocks put out) and increasing your chances
of passing those waiver tests.

Also it was really nice to see Ed's son take such an active interest in
WARRIOR on Sat and to see him do so well in the WAB event on Sun. Ed and Mark
Stone should both be complmented for getting their kids involved in the hobby (I
got my son to run some Orcs one time but couldn't interest him in my
Romans................)
