Jon,
Question on use of shields under the Fast Warrior list rules for early
Roman armies.
Roman unit halted and charged by unit with 2HCW. Roman unit losses
combat, is pushed back, and 2HCW unit follows up.
As allowed by list rule, a 2nd Roman unit interpenetrates through the 1st
Roman, replacing the 1st Roman unit in combat and counting the
replacement as a charge for combat.
Question: Does the 2HCW unit count shieldless in this second round of
combat?
Thanks,
Ed

Yes. 7.1, fifth bullet under 'exceptions'.

As a follow-up, Ed, I can see the issue now. 6.523 (Replacing in Combat)
unfortunately uses the word charging without further explanation. Replacing
in combat is a different kind of 'charge' that has all of its
characteristics, but the target is considered in a second bound of combat. I
will get a clarification out on this with the next set. Good catch.
This will go hand in hand with a clarification I am working on that
explicitly defines both 'facing' as in facing a given weapon type and 'first
contact'.
Those 2HCW are still shieldless when the romans replace against them.
