Just a short note to say that the Sambre Battle Day on the 16th went
fantastically well and a big thank you to all those who came and put on
games and took part - it couldn't happen without your enthusiasm.
Additional thanks to Phil Sabin and Adrian Goldsworthy for their
fascinating talks on the battle and the Roman army of the late republic and
their willingness to answer as many questions as we could throw at them
with obvious enthusianam and remarkable depth of knowledge and recall.
The background to the battle is appearing in the July Slingshot with the
battle reports, etc. in the September issue.
The participants seemed keen for us to run a third such event next year and
so we are already looking for ideas and suggestions for the battle and how
the day can be further improved for the participants. It is probably time
to leave the classical world behind and a Crusades period battle has been
mooted, perhaps Dorylaeum, but all suggestions are welcome.
Once again thanks to all who took part.
