Mike oakes (UK) fields this Russ army too, he also struggles with the lack of
mounted troops without ally generals etc. Is it possible for the list ho to
just check this list over.

First I have to tell you that there were 12 people at the tournament,
and it was the usual excellent event!

In the thread between Frank and Mark, I saw a guy running F.French
with mostly IrgA EHK and a few LMI CB. The knights ran straight at
the enemy in all three games as huge mass all at once, and in all
three games the terrain channeled the knights into nasty stuff. In
the first game it ran straight into Russ spear and routed (one unit
routed, recovered, charged, routed, and recovered). The French lost.

Ambrose faced this same army, and sitting on a hill his longbowmen
(100yw english) deployed stakes and proceeded to rape the French
kniggits. I only saw a portion of this game, but he said 3 or 4
units of knights hit him at once. One of those units hit at down 9
or something insane. I'll leave Ambrose to comment, but it sounds as
if stakes function correctly.

Many moons ago (2 years or so) I made comment on the FW first crusade
list in effect thanking Scott for giving the close order bowmen JLS
options. This option paid off for me huge this tournament. Needless
to say, those archers not only shot everything to peices that
impacted on my HI JLS/sh infantry, but then added there JLS in HTH.
Awsome great fun. Even saw one unit of 16 LMI hit me standing still,
shot it down for 2 on the way in and routed it on contact. Woohoo!
The danger is of course recoiling will disorder and make the entire
unit shieldless MI, so I was able to minimize that risk and indeed
avoided it. The only danger I was in with my massed infantry was
when Wes rammed his Russ spearmen into their front and did 144
casualties to my return 108. If I hadn't demoralized his army that
bound, he would have routed them next turn.

Nothing is more fragile than shock infantry that get caught in the
open by mounted. The most points I lost this tournament were when my
Danish LHI rolled down and stuck rather than routed enemy opponants.
In my first game a gentle hill in the center saw 5 total units
(probably around 6000 men) destroyed on it's slopes. I lost 3 units,
my opponant lost 2. I took the hill :)

Last observation is that El should never be run in 2E units. My
close order infantry became elephant killing machines, as the back
rank of bow shot them tired, disordered, then charge impetous thanks
to the encouraging CNC's banner and routed the buggers. In one turn
I crushed 3 such elephant units who then burst through the maden
guard and swept one away that had shaken. Then the CNC went down to
a hail of arrows and swinging axes from the Danes. Ugly yet cute.

Against the Russ, I was masterful. His only weakness a single unit
of LC B, which I put 2 HC L/sh and 2 LC J/B/sh on. Needless I
crushed that flank and only gave half a HC unit's points since I
couldn't get him to return to the field after chasing the LC back to
the steppes. Rolled up the flank and shook hands. Wes was a real
sport, and we talked about that armies need for more mounted. My main
commentary on this game is that everyone, including me, should be as
sportsman like as Wes. We both learned in this game.

Again, an excellent tournament!
