My second 1500 point game played a few days ago and we are getting much quicker
at this. Especially true of this game where there was very little cagey play on
the flanks and a frontal assault by both sides. My brother was in great fear of
the horrendous possibilities of impetuous Celtiberian LMI bearing HTW so he
fielded the maximum number of irregular Thracians and Illyrians possible, hence
the rapid clash. Well it came to pass that I once again demonstrated why I hate
Irregular A class troops. Not only did I lose every single combat but my two
best Irregular A's failed to roll a single plus, joining similar failures with
Irregular A Germans, Galatians, Parthian Cataphract camels and myriad scythed
chariots.
So all over and done in under six bounds and oh boy do those irregular units get
exhausted quickly with HTW and 2HCW around. Despite their failure my brother was
quite awed by the Spanish and said that they would be unbeatable if used by
someone with better luck than me i.e anyone. So we then played two FW games of
Spanish vs Romans then Hellenistics(only Thereuphoroi) with me taking the
regulars. In both cases I managed to neutralise the slight Spanish advantage in
numbers and weather the first charges ,especially by making a couple unimpetuous
through unease, and thereafter a slogging match in which the irregulars fatigue
got the better of them, once again demonstrating that pure stats don't follow
through to the battlefield.
One for the list HO. You are going to give JLS to the Spanish in the full
Warrior list are you not? The Spanish used a variety of javelins, some
conventional and some the all iron Soliferrum which could be classified HTW. The
old Hutchby/Clark list gave the option for HTW for half the unit as well as JLS
and of course JLS would preserve the Spanish ability to skirmish which is
essential to their character.

Paul

Fellow General,
It is a sad day when your Irr A troops don't roll up. Very Sad.
But I have found several ways to help make those units perform as expected:
1. Let them start partying early the day prior to the battle. Yes this may
mean marching quicker to get to where the fight is, but those troops will
end up going to sleep earlier in the night in lieu of letting them get
wasted, fornicating, and howling at all night long. (if this doesn't work,
drug the wine)
2. If #1 is not an option, then schedule your battles later in the day after
those troops have had some good sleep. You will have to make the opposing
general wonder what the hell is going on in you camp; but just make sure he
doesn't attack you while your A's are sleeping. It is better to have them
on the battlefield rather than not have them at all.
3. Let them know what get if they succeed. There's nothing like conquering!
But maybe your A's are upset that you usually split the bounty evenly
between all your troops. You must let the A's know that they are special,
let them pillage and plunder first before the rest of the troops.
This is actually the secret of the Romans that no-one else figured out, you
see not only were they promised to be land owners before the battles, but
they ALSO were allowed much pillaging, and that was not even restricted to
the conquered women!
Anyhow, I'll conclude by reiterating that you are not alone in your
circumstances. I hope the above advice suits you well.

If all else fails, try marching your 'Irregular A' figures out in column and
smashing every tenth one flat with a hammer. I have heard that can work.

Yeah Vaughn ... I remember you. When are you going to come down and play?
Did you ever get ahold of Mark McKenzie?
Also, you remember Harlan Garrett, he is up in your area now for a little bit,
as a guest of Uncle Sams Green Machine. He is coming down for the 4th of July
marathon ancients thing (and BBQ/Keg party) this weekend.
Anyway ... come and play already. You can email me offline at;
