Sunday afternoons – the time to straighten up the house with football
playing in the background. It is also when I realize that I am being
overrun by thousands of little metal men (and a few women) in boxes and
cases of all shapes and sizes strewn throughout my office.
So I am asking for suggestions on how I might create a storage / transport
system. I have the space, the willpower, and tools – I just need to hear
how everyone else stores their miniatures to keep sanity and marriages
intact. I have primarily 15mm miniatures with balsa bases, though I do have
a few (hundred) 25mm / 28mm.
Any and all suggestions are welcomed.
Thanks in advance.

Okay. Here are mine, although i don't have the tools or the knowhow
to implement them completely:
1. I bought a glass paneled display case that my wife thinks goes
with our furniture. Or you can use "lawyers'" bookshelves that have
glass panes and four to six levels.
2. I store/display most of my best little men in these in my library
at home.
3. Buy some precut steel basesthat are the same size or a little
smaller than your bals bases.
4. Superglue them to the bottom of your balsa bases.
5. Build or scrounge some nice wooden boxes- boxes for cases or half
cases of wine do nicely. Glue magnetized plastic sheeting to the
inside bottom of the boxes.
6. Get a softsided carry-on bag (I like canvas) in which to stack a
couple of boxes. This way you can carry with you whichever army
you're playing with and leave the other boxes at home. A an
architect, you could probably figure out a gismo to reinforce or
connect the boxes when stacked together in this way.
7. As for unpainted lead, I use the plastic cabinets you can mount on
your garage wall that contain 30 or 40 plastic trays each. I then
sort figures into units to be painted (someday).

I use several toolboxes for my 25 mm armies and store them in the bottom of
a closet out of the way. Derek Downs has a more elaborate system at his
house for storing 20 or 25 25 mm armies, I'm pretty sure he ended up
building racks from 2 x 4s to store the wide, flat plastic boxes he keeps
his lead in.
Hope this helps,
Jamie White

I have no real solution and I am also looking for some ideas.
Anyway, For 25mm I have been using Xerox boxes. I cut some corrugated
cardboard the size of the box, glue two of them together for
support . That becomes one level. I then get a tupperware (deep one)
storage container about two of them.
I put the tupperware in the bottom of the box. I put figures in it
and figures around it. then put my glued corrugated cardboard on top
of the tupperware( watch for the spearpoints) . Now I have a second
level. Repeat the proceedure for a second level.\n I can get about three levels to a box. It is not great but it is
storage. The bottom levels are more for infantry , top for cav.
for 15mm Plano fishing boxes are very good , but lately I have had
trouble locating some. Most of the stores around my area don't carry
the type I original got.

I took several inexpensive cabinets and built a large number of slideout
shelves into them. I made the shelves out of finished plywood and used
slide assemblies used in making desk drawers. The shelves run about
$7-$8 each, slide hardware about $5 at the local Low's Hardware and the
plywood at about $2 per slideout. You build the shelves to match the
height of the figures that will be going into them. I spaced the
slideouts every 2 to 4 in apart, depending if they were to hold 15's or
25's. You will be amazed at the total number of square feet of storage
you can build into a single 6' high cabinet by getting rid of the wasted
air space.
I removed the doors to the cabinets, but the doors can be left on for a
more finished look that fades into the background.
