The best terrain model for wargaming "woods" that I have ever seen
was a demo game I played in years ago put on at one of the HMGS-E
cons by HAWKS for a feudal skirmish game using the BattleLust rules
(the Welsh ambushing the Normans at a choke point where a road ran
between two large woods).

There was a base of felt, or similar material, with top views of
trees or forest paths outlined on it.

Then there was a single-piece tree canopy. This consisted of a whole
bunch of tree trunks with the leafy top part (whatever the heck you
call them), all connected together in one matching piece that fit to
the felt base.

Only the trees along the edge actually had trunks, but the canopy
leaf cover was complete.

So you could move troops in by taking the canopy top off, then (if
desired) put it back on top and the troops were hidden in the woods.

I have seen this method written up somewhere, maybe Donald
Featherstone or one of those guys had it in one of their books. Or
maybe it was in one of the WHAB books.

I don't know, maybe someone else has already suggested this idea on
the thread and I missed it.
