Was Game Time.

For many years, I've run a format based on 1400 points in 3 hours in
15mm.

In Your Face Game Format
1400 pts
3 hours
15mm
table is 5' x 3'
rear zones are 480 paces.

With this format, you must fight cause there is no place to run. LC/LI
is still valuable but it cannot grab large part of the table. I hace
had games decided in 40 minutes. Chris Damoure's first charge of his
Viking army didn't stop until it got to the table edge. Ewan McNay
with Selucids won a game in 30 minutes with just his LI and chariots.
I prefurr 25mm but this make 15mm games feel more like a 25. I came up
with this format so a 15mm HI/MI would get into the fight early
instead of make charge on the last turn.

My favorite short game format is;

a) 1,250 points

b) 480p deployment area

c) no deployment in the flank sectors

d) "honor system movement" (move a unit and state the distance)

e) once you move a unit and take your hand off it, death to you if
you touch it again before charges.

My brother-in-law and I used to play TOG this way, and rarely did a
game last more than an hour and 30 minutes.

I like this as well but with the proviso of only "lights" deploying in the flank
sectors!

PS WOW this only give a Kommenan Byzantine 250 points of choice since their
burden is over 1,000 points. Sadly, some armies are better at more points while
others suffer at less. My suggestion for this format would be similar to what
Scott does at the Mini at Historicon where he allows the minimums to be halved
which is very fair.

Actually Kelly, we tried it this way and found that it did not have
the effect we were looking for. Players just force marched a single
small unit of lights in the flank, then marched the solid wall of
foot into position. The player that actually tried to put his lights
out there in force, usually ended up facing a wall of archers
anchored on the table edge. This tended to be the exact opposite
effect of what we were looking for ... a scenario where light troops
had to actually fight a pre-main battle line action, as was evident
in many historical battles.

Thanks ... g

Well Greg,
I would be very open to trying a tournament with your parameters. The only
thing is that I think it would be cool if ambushers were still allowed to be
placed as long as they did not move from their positions for 2 or 3 turns or if
they came within a certain specified distance from visible enemy troops.
Additionally, This is another reason for playing on a 5'x8' table surface.
