I would be interested, obviously, in hearing from anyone who
playtested the new Roman legion list rules or has actually had a
chance already to play them. Or even anyone who has played their
predecessors under Fast Warrior.
For instance how do the Romans best take advantage of the HtH
replacement rules that have been around for ages? I am presuming you
need two legion units - one to stick the first combat and eat up the
enemy charge and first-bound bonuses, then the second to charge thru
against a stationary opponent with no support shot the second bound
and really blow them away. I guess also this way the Romans
effectively get a second bound with the HTW.
It seems to be if you are going to use the anti-Dacian EHI (not
necessarily a great idea) then the thing to do is use the EHI in the
first charge to soak up the worst the other guy has to offer, then
replace them in the second bound by a HI unit stationed behind and
screened by them. Something like that?
Anyone have any more concrete examples they can share from actual
play? What to do right or what not to do?
And jeepers these guys are expensive! And you still can be a bit
hamstrung by the fact that loose order simply does not have to fight
you. But at least you can't be caught flat footed anymore and you
have a way to stand up to cavalry lancers.
On this last subject, how do people handle the Roman legion formation
options? There are now both fulcum and testudo to consider as really
viable formations to defeat certain threats. Are there any practical
issues going in and out of either that have been brought to light by
experience?
All in all on the surface I expect to be quite happy with the
revitalized Romans. Probably not going to be the latest "killer army"
but certainly much more playable now - though there are probably some
very good players who have never lost the ability to win with them.
Unfortunately the Roman theme torunament Friday at Historicon will
likely be my first chance to play all these nuances out on the table.
Should be interesting.
Any of you NoVa Warrior players up for a 25mm "try it on the dog"
session prior to the con but after I get back from school end of May?
