Pursuant to the previous discussion of this list. I have a version I
would like critiqued. I'll list out the troops, then give my
reasoning.

CinC (spanish) w/PA in a 2E unit of Reg A HK L,Sh
2E unit Reg A HK L,Sh
two 2E units Reg A LHI 1HCW,CB,Sh
2E unit Reg A Wheeled Guns
...that's the CinC command of 5 units
Ally (Tlaxcallan) w/P in a 2E unit of Reg A/B 1HCW,B,Sh
two 4E units of Reg D LI B
6E unit of Reg D LI B
three 2E units of Reg D LI S,Sh
6E unit of Reg D LMI LTS,B,Sh
two 6E units of Reg C LMI LTS,B,Sh
6E unit of Reg B LMI LTS,B,Sh
four 2E units of Reg B LMI LTS,B,Sh
20 units in 2 commands with 10 scouting points

I have the troops as LTS,B,Sh for two reasons. There are a lot of
mounted lancers flying around, so LTS is my best choice to oppose
them. Massed shooting out to 240 paces is powerful, and I can make
great use of it with these guys. The latter point is most important
to give the army as active an attacking role as possible.

I don't have any Irr A priests/Otomi, nor do I have any war dogs.
Why? Well, I don't think I need those...and I feel that they are
choices that would end up costing me more points then they earn.

Critique away!

I like it and the reasoning is sound. One question - and why I have not tried
it out yet - what to do about Late Romans and their ilk. There doesn't appear
to be enough shock to kill their flank stuff and you'll have to skirmish away
from the foot. You won't lose, but you won't go 5-1 either, so what is your
vision of a solid win v LIR?

Well Frank,

First, let me say that I have no comment on the native portion of
the list, only the Spanish. Second, heretical as it seems, I have
actually helped my son build this army, one of his favorites. Third,
my only suggestion is probably wrong. We like the 4E Spanish foot
with HG in front rank, CB back rank. You sacrifice range for
firepower, and since they're loose, you can move into range fairly
quickly. I'd like to hear why you opted against this, since I'm long
on history and very short on playing the game well.

For those contemplating painting this army or the Spanish
contingent: While castigating myself over the fact there was no
Hellenic aspect to this army (that I could tell), I came across one
comforting item. Cortez' personal standard was evidently a flag
bearing an icon (image) of the Theotokos, not Our Lady of Blacharnae
you understand, but still pretty good for a non-Byzantine!!!

I'll take a stab, having built and playtested this army several
games. First, the army doesn't exactly have a great frontal coverage,
but you do well with those type armies, so who cares? Hmmm...relying
almost completely on bow fire to break up the enemy, then charge in?
No two full ranks of LTS ( obviously) means you're skirmishing while
you prep em to death. Not exactly world class shock troops - the I/A
guys add a bit of potential punch. The roving arty is a huge surprise
to the unprepared - that'll help. I actually ran a lot more LMI D's
and fewer LI - I just felt the LI units didn't serve much of a
purpose - too few to really avoid being outscouted and too great a
command break risk. I love the dogs ( naturally) - scares the newbies
witless. ; ) Your worst enemy is probably the Romans making like
turtles pushing you off the table, who just happen to had their new
book released, and thus also given the theme, I expect to see a few
more of than usual. Still...any army on any given day...
