I'm in the processof re-reading Warrior rules, something that we veteran "TOG
gamers" don't do enough of. A couple of TOG vs. Warrior questions have come up
that I don't seem to be able to answer, and one Warrior question all by itself.
1. In TOG, elephants were exempt from treating stakes as an obstacle. This
always struck me as a little dubious, but then as a knight/cavalry player I take
a dim view of elephants. If elephants have this exemption in Warrior, then I
can't find it. So Jon, do elephants treat stakes as an obstacle or not?
2. In TOG, there were certain types of temporary field fortifications that
anyone could buy, whether or not they were on your army list, provided you only
placed them in your rear zone. In Warrior, there doesn't appear to be this
distinction. It appears that the only temporary field fortifications an army
gets are the ones explicitly mentioned by army list. Jon, have I got that right?
3. Wagons. I have read and re-read the rules pertaining to fighting transport,
and I have more questions than when I started. I suspect the solution is for Jon
to do a clinic article on wagons, but in the mean time, here are a few
questions:
a. Are wagons occupied with regular troops exempt from the requirement that
regulars have even ranks? If not, then I can't figure out how to legally set up
German Communal Infantry in Wagenburg. Consider a unit that has 2 wagons, and 4
stands of MI. The wagons take up 4 elements frontage, consisting of 2
elements of mantleted horses, and 2 of actual wagons. 2 of the MI elements
_have_ to go in the wagons, under 13.314: "1 foot element must be 'carried' by
each wagon...." If my MI are LTS, then I want the other two elements to be
behind the MI elements in the wagons, but this would give me a front rank of 4
elements and a rear rank of 2, which is illegal for regulars. If my MI are 2HCT,
then I want the other two elements behind the mantleted horses, which would
still give me ranks of 4 and 2. So how does one do this?
b. This is just double-checking, but while I'm at it: the horses count as
tethered animals, don't they? In other words, elements behind the horses are
defending an obstacle, right?
c. What happens when an element in a wagon loses in hand to hand combat (takes
1 CPF and more)? Does it recoil? Does the whole wagon recoil? Under 13.342 it
says that "the combined foot/wagon elements are considered to be foot troops for
all purposes" which, if taken literally, says that the foot element AND the
wagon both recoil. This doesn't make any sense, though. I would have thought
that the foot would have been recoiled out of the wagon. But 13.314 seems to
make it pretty clear that the foot element in the wagon and the wagon are one,
and inseparable.
d. Can a foot element in a wagon ever voluntarily move out of the wagon? If so,
then why can't it set up outside of the wagon?
Anyway, some clarification here would be appreciated.

Elephants ignore the effects of portable obstacles. 6.71/13.14.

Yes, only by list.

You should have read the 15 June Clarifications, too, Mark. :)

First, read the clarification on how a fighting wagon unit 'deploys' - this will
prevent you having to worry about how you get back and forth from moving
formation to fighting formation.
Second, fighting transport with one element 'in' them are just one element, not
two. And 'mantleted horses' are not an element of troops so do not count.
This will make it possible to have a two rank deep body with wagons, but not
easy to do - which is deliberate.

If the list contains that ability, yes.

See the clarifications.

No - they are bought together and stay together, like integral transport. See
13.314 next to last sentence.
Swiss answers when I get to my copy of Feudal Warrior.
