I've been fascinated by the posts on Roman and Byzantine armies et
al. It's great! Informative, yet not too combative. ;)

Personally, I've always considered Roman armies to be aberations that
need specific rules, rather than a base type to base a rules set
upon. :)

But as I haven't done such a thing, all I can add is my US$0.02

However, a few ideas spring to mind about Tournament "Shopping" lists.

The first is that Tournament organisers have some say in what they
allow. Obvious, yes. So they could:

1) Require a core army as per the FW lists. Extra points then add
frilly lace to the army. Very effective at 1200 points.

2) Limit the number of "optional" ( = zero to ??) troop types
allowed. This could be extended to limiting the number of optional
upgrades as well. Not quite so extreme as the "Dogs of War" (which
sounds quite good to me, running Ancient British trash as I do, and
no World Cup Soccer tournament to export them to... ), but it would
put some brakes on elite armies ALWAYS appearing.

3) Allow tournament players to submit two lists - one "Open"
(whatever is legal by the list) and one "Restricted" (as determined
by tournament organiser). At each battle, each general dices for
which of those two armies he plays. 1-4 = Restricted, 5-6 = Open.
Might stop the "I'll use this list against these type of armies and
this other list against others"

Also, sounds good about additional FW lists.

Terry
