What about this for a tourney sometime in the future.
First Round - 1200 point 'Mini'
Second Round - 2 (or 3) Fast Warrior Games
Third Round - 1600 point 'Open'
This is similar to the Medley Relay in Track and Field (they still do
that don't they?). Third round could be bracketed by total points
with Top points vs. 2nd most, etc. etc. (Swiss chess). I dunno, but
I think that might be kind of fun, plus it would give exposure to the
various systems and the inherent challenges for each one.

Nice, but I suspect that my preferred Army, Late Imperial Roman,
might be at a disadvantage.

Really..? As a newbie, help me to understand why such a well
balanced army such as LIR would be disadvantaged. BTW, that's one of
my armies (will be finished in February anyway).

Yes , it is well balanced, when you have the points to balance it.
Legio's are expensive. Auxilia infantry are cheaper but are not large
enough to survive for long.
I am trying to balance the historical strengths of this army with
what is demanded by the rules.
The cavalry units were around 300 strong after the split of the
Empire into East and West. Of course I am biased anyway, I prefer a
larger game, around 2500 to 3000 points. Then you can field more than
a rump of an army.

Not to mention that the army lists are pre-set so you wont' be able to tailor
make the Late Imperial Slime, er Romans, to fit any enemy on any day:):)

This is mostly for Harlan, but I thought I would post it here to get input from
other people.
This would be a team tournament in 15mm. Each player would bring a 1200 point
army, and we would use eight foot tables.
The organizer would rank all the players from who he thinks is the top seed all
the way down to the lowest seeded player. This would be done in private - no
sense pissing anyone off. He would then call out the teams, which would be the
top seed, teamed with the lowest seed, etc ... The order should be scrambled so
as to hide exactly whom was seeded, where.
When you line up on the table, the highest ranked player on each team must be
opposite each other. You can help your partner all you want, but he has to push
all his own lead. This would help ensure that the more experienced guy actually
explains how something is done, rather than just doing it for his teammate.
There are some nice advantages to this tournament. It would give the newest
players a chance to be teamed with an old hat that at least knows how to play
and has a grasp on strategy. It would help people get to know each other and
might help remove some of the intimidation factor.
The obvious difficulty is that you have to have an appropriate number of
people. What I would suggest is that if you decide this idea is workable, tell
everyone to have a 1200 point list and regular 1600's, so that you have a fall
back position in case 10 show instead of 12. (for example).
I think you could do two games on Saturday and one on Sunday. This would give
everyone time to go out and party on Saturday night. Nothing builds a group
better than having fun with the other players outside the competitive arena.
I think this could work well in our area, because all-in-all we have a very
friendly group with good sportsmanship.
Take care ...

Not a bad Idea! But I would much prefer all three games on Saturday. It makes
the drive back from Dallas less taxing back to my home in Kansas City.
