Can anyone help me?

I need to paint up some Bithynian foot and cav for my Marians. I know where
this province was, but have no idea what these troops would look like. I am
considering mixing some Dacians and Thracians together but both of these
peoples are a little to the west and certainly more in europe than the Biths.
Would
these guys look more like Persians or Armenians or what? They are too far
north to look arabic yet. Have ravaged my Osprey collection (have every ancient
and majority of medieval volumes published) and also Barkers books on punic
and Imperial rome. Can find no pictures or descriptions. So does someone have
some insight?

Thanks,
Chris

My understanding is that the Bithynians, while a Thracian group, also had
influences from the Kappadokians (sp?) as well as the various Hill peoples
located in Asia Minor. I am mixing Hill People (25%), Early Thracians (50%)
and Kappodokians (25%) on my stands to get the desired mix - I am
considering using the long "Gallic" style of shield for them (as opposed to
the Pelte or Hoplon). The cavalry will be entirely Thracian. I am painting
them like later Thracians - with not quite as many patterns and more areas
of solid cloth - but this is purely conjecture on my part as the tribes in
Northern Asia Minor didn't seem to use as much bright colors and patterns as
some of the Western Thracians or other peoples farther South and East.
Apparently the Thracians toned down their dress as they had more contact
with the Greeks. Keep in mind that I am building them for a Later
Achaemenid Persian army of about 375 BC, so they will have picked up other
influences by the time the Romans showed up. Most of my information is from
the Osprey book on the Thracians (#360) which talks some of the Bythinians
with snippets picked up from the Punic War / Macedonian WRG book by Duncan
Head (figures #55 through #72). I know this sounds like much of the same
information you already have - but I too have had problems getting an image
of a true "Bithynian" so have had to do some of my own reconstructing.

Xyston has some great 15mm Thracian figs as well as Hill People that should
work great for the Bithynians. I can't help you much with 25mm figs. If
you go to Xyston.com you can at least see the mix of headgear and shields
available.

I hope this helps you out.

While I think this is accurate as far as it goes, in the period that
your Bithynian army is likely to come from, they would have been
Black Sea/Asia Minor neighbors of Mithradates of Pontus. Thus, I
imagine them less as Asiatic Thracians than as less prosperous
Pontics/Kappadocians/Pergamenes. Kind of half skythian/bactrian and
half pontic, depending on troop type and weaponry of each unit. I'm
not familiar with the army list, but you might consider using
Pontic/Kappadican/Pergamene figures for command stands or open
terrain or lowlander types such as close formation foot or heavy cav
(if any).
