You are incorrect about me and Roman manipular tactics. I love them and am
specifically designing the only ancients game where they work.
Specifically,
<<The Roman checkerboard formation is just what Jon hates as he has stated:
"The 'pulling' of 6.165 can't be done to a proper line of troops. If you
want to have a lot of little attack columns running around, beware...">>
I was not referring to maniples in this sentence. Correctly used maniples
would by definition be what I meant by proper line of troops. Maniples are
NOT "a lot of little attack columns running around..."
"a bit more bias against reg troops it seems as small unit size is their
main strength."
I am not biased against reg troops. I'm Han for Pete's sake... talk about
your small reg units...lol
Take it back.
Jon

Depends on the type of game you play and your opponent. Here we do fine
just saying to our opponents "these units are lined up one behind the
other". Saves a lot of extranious lab equipment costs which we pour into
more lead .

Does not slow play for us at all. Merely state your intent as I said above.
Do you run into problems with opponents bringing their labs to your games?
What if you want to approach a JLS armed LMI unit and not get hit by the JLS
in Prep. Do you micromanage it or just tell your opponent "I am just
outside 40p ok?". Same principle applies here. You might just have a house
rule that says no optical equipment allowed .

Don,
I have played with both types of players, most with the statement of " in
or out", but in tight games have run into those who push to the letter of
the rules ( so what else is new ). Hard to argue with if the issue did
not come up until a critical point and in movement a stand is left
sticking out a mm or so. I do not see an umpire ruling against the
player taking a hard line as it is within the rules.
The whole approach used to charge a unit behind another unit seems silly
to me and has the potential to cause problems. As I play Romans as much
as anything else, all those small attacking columns, one behind the other
is the norm.
The Roman checkerboard formation is just what Jon hates as he has stated:
"The 'pulling' of 6.165 can't be done to a proper line of troops. If you
want to have a lot of little attack columns running around, beware..."
a bit more bias against reg troops it seems as small unit size is their
main strength.
