I have a recommendation to ditch part of rule 2.52, "UNITS". The line I
would like to see gone is "Regular troops must have an equal number of
elements in each rank. " My reasoning is that figures already represent 5
ranks of men, and if if you have 2 elements filled of a 4 element frontage,
than you are representing 2-3 ranks of men. The rule appears to only provide
a visual clue as to the nature of a unit but does put some restrictions.
For instance, I saw at Historicon, a unit of 48 pikemen, laid out in 1
rank of 12 elements. Other than deploying in that formation, there is no way
for the pike unit to get in that kind of formation. And the only way out
seems to be to do two facing moves.
