Mounted infantry seems to be extremely expensive for something which
can only move in a column, so I'm wondering about the tactics
involved in actually getting it deployed.

In DBX, you can usefully block a flank by marching up a line of
mounted archers and the nags are pretty cheap.

In Warrior if an Irregular general wants to deploy his reserve of
mounted infantry, it seems that they would have to move in column,
somehow end with their facing in exactly the direction needed-
swinging the tail of the column if necessary, dismount, and then
expand the column of infantry. This is a lot more than Irregular
troops can do in one bound.

Even a general plus bodyguard dismounts with his bodyguard uselessly
in the second rank!
