Warrior Status as of 16 January 2001.

I am now finishing up the final draft of the rules from section 1.0 to
section 7.0. Once complete, that will go to our beta editors for review.
While they are doing that, I will finish 8.0 to 18.0 and send that out to
them while I am fixing what they found wrong with 1.0 to 7.0.
While that is being done, I am periodically working on reviewing and
playtesting Scott's herculean 273 Fast Warrior lists. As they will be
included in the core rulebook, they cannot 'wait' until the 'rest of Warrior'
is written.
Scott has finished a second draft of Biblical Warrior, our first army list
book. That also has to be reviewed as our going in position has always been
to release the first army book concurrently with the rules.

So, you ask, what the hell is taking so long.
First, we slowed our progress deliberately with my harebrained scheme to
include this thing called Fast Warrior. I must say I am proud of what it has
become, mostly through Scott's list work. It has revolutionized bringing new
players into the game. It now takes a new guy 5-8 units and about an hour
per game to get into Warrior. I am absolutely convinced that it is worth any
delay caused.
Second, we are abiding by the philosophy that however long we take to get the
rules right, you guys have the rest of your lives to point out our mistakes.
This, coupled with the 'no Warrior 1.1' directive, makes us
near-perfectionists.
Third, those pesky diagrams. They have to be done, I have to do them and
they, while not 'hard' to do, take up a lot of time per diagram. See
'near-perfectionist' above.
Fourth, every once in a while I uncover a 'snag' that I thought we had fixed
or even one I had not known was there. Most just take a few drafts tossed in
the wastebasket. A couple require discussions amongst the FH. One or two
get aired out here when there is no clear 'best solution' and we hit you guys
up for opinions.

News on the warrior tournament front: The NASAMW is supporting us in a huge
way by running only Warrior tournaments (vice 7.6, there will be DBX, Armati,
etc.) at Cold Wars. Since we won't have published by then, I am preparing a
cheat sheet that covers the differences between Warrior and WRG 7.6. This
cheat sheet, AND a newer draft of the rules, will be available to all by 1
Feb. You guys on the egroup will get the sheet by email and it and the new
draft will be in the egroup files for download by that date. Other folks can
get it (them) there or on Scott H's home page. The cheat sheet will also be
included in the pre-Cold Wars Spearpoint.

To see which Warrior events (a doubles tourney and a mini (not Fast Warrior))
are available at Cold Wars, go to Scott's page at:
http://www.dauphinehotel.com/coldwars.htm

About the 1 Feb draft of the rules. I have always been nervous about putting
the rules online late in the drafting process. I am taking everyone at their
word that they'll buy it when the time comes and, anyway, the Fast Warrior
lists won't be in there yet!

Post publication plans (after a short breather) include:
The other army books: Dark Age Warrior, Imperial Warrior, Holy Warrior, etc.
Fantasy Warrior
Siege Warrior
Fleet Warrior
x-rules on the egroup so you can try new ideas
a responsive rules-writer and discussion group

Post-publication plans do NOT include subsequent editions of the rules that
change how your army performs!

Thanks to the 106 of you for your support. We'll get there.
Jon

Although we are still trying, I would not get my hopes up about Historicon.
I won't go with a lesser printed product just to make that deadline. I am
sure we can make Fall In, though, and have a published rulebook for the
entire 2002 season.

Will the guy who offered to do the cover and FHE logo please get me at my
personal email address. I think I remember who you are, but am not 100% sure.

I will put the best possible draft up on the group no later than 20 June so
that the group has the best possible clean copy to work with for tourneys in
Lancaster. That will be the copy the judges use no matter how much further
along we get between 20 June and 19 July.

We MAY be able to still get Biblical Warrior out by Hcon. We'll see.

I'll be at the con so you can all throw tomatoes.
Jon

>Obviously I fully agree with Jon. I had the "pleasure" of using the Feb
Warrior at Nashcon and then switch over to reading DBA 2.0. Man oh man, what
a difference. It actually *hurt* to read DBA. That being said, I still find
things in Warrior that could stand some additional clarification. Having one
more "big" show in which to shake out those items wouldn't hurt the product in
the long run.

>And please, everyone remember, that while we are technically writing this for
the faithful hardcore true believers so that we can maintain and use the rules
for another dozen years, we're also really wanting to be able to bring new
people in to (or back in to) Warrior. The fact that the rules are complex
isn't the hurdle. Being able to read them is and at it's heart, that's what
Warrior is all about.

>Works for me.

>I just received the last of the "qualitative tweaks" and will input them
tonight. If I haven't heard definitively from the final "proofreader" by the
end of the week, we'll go forward with what we have. I *think* most proofing
is in fact done at this point. What I'm saying is that I'm pretty sure
Biblical Warrior can be out by Hcon.

>On a related note, Dark Age Warrior is now over half finished. I worked on
four lists over the weekend. Now that I have a slightly better process in
place for proofing and review, I can get it into the hands of those people
earlier and hopefully we'll have it ready for Fall In. No promises on that
but it's what I'm shooting for.

If we throw in volleys, can we achieve regular status, or must we be
uniformed ?
