Hello All,

Due to popular demand and the poor economy, we have moved the location for
Winter War 2003. The tournament will be held at Lone Star Comics in
Arlington, TX. We have taken a page out of the Wal-Mart Manager Manual and
rolled back the prices to $10 if you pre-register and $15 at the door. What
a bargain $2.00 a game! The tournament is in 15-mm. For those of you who
already prepaid, I will return your checks at the tournament.

Happy Gaming

Harlan,
How are we gonna get 5 games into one day? Correct me if I'm wrong here,
but is this gonna be a tournament friendly to folks who will need Sunday for
travel time? I know that I will have to work the following monday and I will
need Sunday to get home. For that matter how long are the games? 5 games at 3.5
to 4 hours in one day? ;( I'm getting a headache just thinking about that!

Kelly,

Unfortunately, this tournament may not be the most friendless for you and
your drive. We are having three games on Saturday and two games on Sunday
with the last game ending by 4:00 on Sunday or earlier if we skip lunch.
The two games on Sunday are for first through fourth place. Most of the
people that are driving in for tournament are taking Monday morning off.

Here is the schedule of events:
Saturday
8:00 to 8:30 Registration
8:30 to 12:00 Game 1
12:00 to 1:00 Lunch
1:00 to 4:30 Game 2
4:30 to 5:30 Dinner
5:30 to 9:00 Game 3
Sunday
8:00 to 11:30 Play Off Game 1
11:30 to 12:30 Lunch
12:30 to 4:00 Game 2

All games are 3-1/2 hours long.

What do you think?

Harlan

Harlan,
I still might try to come to play on Saturday, but Sunday is DEFINITELY out
for me. I work for my living and will need the extra time to get home on Sunday.
I hope that your format does not keep others who are interested in attending
away which is my fear. Even your fellow Texans agree that perhaps 5 warrior
games are too much(Chris Bump specifically). So, Sunday is out for me, but I
shall attend your event on Saturday unless circumstances change.

The Sunday games issue is a raging debate down here (this tourny is
formatted for 3 Saturday, and 2 Sunday). I will let Harlan field the answer
as he and I are in opposite camps. Kelly, do you have Harlans original
flyer? If so just substitute the location. I believe Harlan intends to
keep everything the same except the venue.

This is an attrocious comment! For one I don't believe it, but secondly if
we are trying to gain participation how in any way does this do so? If Greg
and the SA folks want a 5th game, then they can of course play, but I know
from history that if John Green shows, he will not stay until 4 playing. You
already know that most of the DFW folks don't want Sunday games, at the most
a playoff game, not games for points to determine ultimate winner. There is
no reason to have two playoff games to determine the winner. 1 & 2 can play
if that is an absolute must. Why have a playoff for 3rd and 4th spots? Its
your tournament, but I will be suprised to see even half of those who show up
still around for that 5th game. That being the case, why are configuring
this so that people have to decide to take time off of work if they want to
drive here to play?
Scratching my head?
Chris

You see, Harlan, this is true, but not true. Yes every trip to Sa or Killeen
(none since like 97) or Houston have been "two" day tournaments, but in the
same breath we were all done gaming by 12:30-1 and on the road. That last
game was never attended by all the people who played on Saturday and so
inevitably there was an odd man or someone had to play someone they had
either already played or someone from their mutual home. Both things to be
avoided if at all possible in a tournament. Every such time I remember much
grumbling by those who did show up about those who did not. Every such
tournament ends up starting late, because virutally NO ONE shows up at 8 or
even 8:30 Sunday morning. For as long as I have been gaming with you and in
all the tournaments we have attended in H, K and SA we have never played 2
games on Sunday.

Generally the reason we all go to tournaments. My only comment was that it
was unconscionable to say to a potential attendee that basically all or most
others driving in were taking 1/2 of Monday off. This is not one of the big
three and as such should not involve people having to take vacation to
participate.

Ok, I'm stepping in to kill this thread, or at least its public version...

Sunday games are problematic, no question. Please work it out off-group or
go from who shot John to a poll of potential WW attendees.

Chris B.,

Yes, I have noticed that the argument about one-day versus two-day
tournaments are for the most part centered around Dallas/Fort Worth who want
one-day tournaments and San Antonio/Austin who want two-day tournaments. In
the past, whenever the DFW guys drove to San Antonio, Killeen, or Houston,
they (to include you and me) wanted two-day tournaments, but now that the
tournament is in Arlington, they only want a one-day tournament. The
natural compromise is to said, lets have a one and half day tournament, but
we know that will not work. So my compromise is to have a two-day
tournament, if you do not want to attend the second day, then do not. I
understand everyone has a family, job, religious obligations, other hobbies,
etc, if you cannot make the second day, then we will enjoy to have you at
the first day. It is not as if we have regional tournament every weekend,
month, or couple of months. Lately the regional tournaments (in the lesser
Texas area) are extremely infrequent, if my memory serves me correctly, it
has been over eighteen months since our last regional tournament.

I have made this comment before and I will make it again. The Dallas Group
does not have to wait for me to arrange a tournament, you all can schedule
your own tournaments and conducted it in whatever format you want. It get
very tiresome that everyone "bitching" about the tournament format (the
scoring system, the playoff format, the scale, the length of the rounds,
number of days, the location, the cost, plaques/no plaques, prizes/no
prizes, etc), but no one is willing to step forward and host a tournament!
While sometimes the discussion are fruitful, for example changing the
location to get lower cost, other times they just make me wonder if anyone
can host a tournament that will make you all happy!

I will come to a one, two, or three-day tournament just because I like the
game, the competition, and to exchange paint tips. I am just grateful to
play regardless if it is one, two, or three days or even just an evening.

Respectfully and Happy Gaming,
Harlan

Its

your tournament, but I will be suprised to see even half of those who show
up
still around for that 5th game. That being the case, why are configuring
this so that people have to decide to take time off of work if they want to
drive here to play?
Scratching my head?
Chris

go Harlan! I've been following this thread for a
while, thinking "My God, why would ANYONE want to host
a tournament and have to listen to all this crap in
addition?" I don't know if i will make it or not. If I
do, I will gladly pay the premium. If I do, I will
come to play as many games as your format calls for.
Thank you for your hard work on a hobby I have
neglected for a while. We could use more people like
you. Michael

We did host a Tournament recently, it was at Fort Worth Wars in October.

It will be next year as well, hope to see everyone there.

Did you miss Fort Worth Wars? Did you miss Patricks Tourny in August at
Generation X (actually you did not, you were one of four attendees).
Patrick of all people has stepped up big here in DFW. He puts his actions
where his mouth is. See also many post about TCON which Patrick is also
spearheading.

You can not. That is the nature of things. People will bitch. Its what
people do. Without bitching however Lone Star and its substantially reduced
cost would not be the site of our Feb.Winter War.

Well said and I agree. As will I. However for the two dayers, I will
rarely play on Sunday. Last time, I crawled out of bed and got to the site
to find my opponent had not decided to show up. I could have stayed warm
and hung over at home. Many people have said the will not show on Sunday.
As you have stated, so be it. Their not showing should be a forfeit for
their opponent though not a promotion for the next guy back right?
