Scott (whom I copied) suggested that this might post well to the list as
an example, so here it is.

Folks -

- for 12 years now I've been a mamber of HMGS-E, attending HCon and
(sometimes) CW as a tournament ancients gamer. In all that time, I've
asked for nothing from you besides useable space for the tournaments to
exist; I've given a *lot* of time, energy, and effort into supporting the
ancients gaming and a *lot* of money into the dealers you depend on.

Now, I gather, there's a move to exile - I use the word deliberately - the
tournament gaming to the 'Showroom' at the Host.

Summary: this is unacceptable.

I was at the Host this past week, attending the world Boardgaming
Championships. We - the WBC - refused to use that space at all: it's just
not ANY use for tournament gaming of any kind. The lighting, poor floor
plan and other factors combine: it just is not possible to have the games
there.

Which should come as no surprise, given that this battle has been fought
in the past, but perhaps the fact that an *entirely independent* gaming
convention refused to have that space for *any part* of their con will
underline the problem.

Frankly, I'm appalled - it's easy to see how little the tournament games
ask from HMGS, how much they return, how many people they attract; this is
how that's repaid?

Wow.

Anyway, I don't think there can be any doubt as to how I feel about this,
but please let me know if I can provide further input. I don't doubt that
this will be one of many such responses. You'll lose a LOT of people.
Maybe not at HCon 06 - but in the aftermath? You bet.

Thanks, Ewan

As an aside, I am jealous of your participation in the WBC. I miss that part of
the hobby...
