As written in HW, the Varangians are initially armed with 2hcw or jls, sh.
They are then offered the opportunity, if armed with 2hcw, to add jls.
The list rule states that Varangians armed with only 2hcw may fight 1.5 ranks if charging, counter charging or pursuing.

I am wondering if the armed only with 2hcw must be the case in both ranks or may the first rank have 2hcw and Jls while the back rank has only 2hcw in order to fight 1.5 ranks.

Must the entire unit be armed with only 2hcw to fight 1.5 ranks or only the back rank?

Isn't this more of a rules question? No offense to either Scott or Chris, but isn't the list rule in Black and White? The unit must be all only armed with 2hcw in order to get half of the rear rank when charging with 2hcw. I understand that one would like to make Varangians better, but this subject has been covered over a year or more in the past. I believe one can find similar posts in the archives if I'm not incorrect.
