Mark, I have been researching with great interest the Knights Hospitallar (What will become the Knights of St. John on Rhodes and Malta etc...) I have read "The Monks of War" by Desmond Seward and "The Shield and the Sword" by Ernle Bradford.
My question is - are there any other good books on the K of St. John/Hospitallars out there to continue my learning??? _________________ Nolite te Bastardes Carborundorum

Alan Forey "The Military Orders - From the Twelfth to the Early Fourteenth Centuries" 1992, ISBN (paperback ed) 0-8020-7680-7
Like the other works you mentioned this is wider in scope covering most of the military orders rather than focusing on the Hospital. |

John,
Thanks for the info - I am looking into learning more about the great siege of Rhodes in 1480. Very cool stuff indeed.

You may be interested in an historical novel called; The Shadow Of God: A Novel Of War And Faith by A. Goodman. It details the Ottoman seige of Rhodes. Highly recomended |

Not quite the same - but Ernle Brandford also produced a work called "The Great Seige" which is a narrative history of the seige of Malta -
Same two teams but a different venue for the deciding match
I will leaf throug my references tonight and let you know some other books on Military Orders in general and the Knights Hospitaller in particular

I'll probably check out the Bradford Great Siege book as well - thanks for the input.
What I'd love is the 1480 siege of Rhodes - very hard to find great depth. I have read numerous accounts of the siege, from Bradford as well, but they don't go into specifics that I like. I have searched through the internet and found a few names that I wanted. Plus, Bradford and others have given me the standard's (banner) information that I also needed.

Hi Todd,
You could also try Helen Nicholson's "The Knights Hospitaller" - it is a general history of the order. It has been a while since I read it and so I can't remember how well it covers the siege of Rhodes.
Another surprising reference on the Hospitallers is 'Palestine of the Crusaders' by Phillipe Aziz. This appears to be part of a Readers Digest or Time Life collection - I picked it up cheap in a secondhand bookshop in Bendigo. About 1/3 of the book is dedicated to the Hospitallers and has interesting snippets of information including the words to their initiation ceremony.

Having recently finished this novel I can say that I truly enjoyed it. It gave an excellent portrayal of the 1522 siege in a novel format. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the Knights of St. John. It is a tad fictional at parts, but the author acknowledges this and moves on. Thanks again Wargame692000 for the suggestion.
Sincerely,

No problems at all. One of the guys from our Gaming group in Sydney purchased it and I am sure it has been read by at least 6 gamers so far.
Cheers
Paul. |
