Other than chariot runners, which I think are hardly ever seen on the open tournament tables (at least I do not remember any), what are the uses if any for LI detachments for mounted units, say for instance cavalry lancers?
Obviously they represent a cost savings, I do not know if there are any usable tactical tricks based on the fact they are a detachment. But hey that is why I figure this is the place to ask right?
And what are the liabilities? Obviously the movement restrictions but are there any tactical pitfalls to be aware of?
Note - generally I would expect it is much better to use the LI on its own just wondering what the ramifications are _if_ you take them this way. |

One of the most useful aspect of the parent/detachment relationship is the ability for the parent to rally the detachment from rout. In the case of a unit of lancers behind LI, it both supports the LI and serves as a rally point.
I have also seen players use Knights with a detachment of foot. When dismounted, the foot form behind the Knights to bolster numbers.

are there some ramifications to the _requirement_ for this happen though?
ie...
i forget if the lancers get disordered by this joining (memory is telling me LI are the exception for this but maybe it is disordered instead of shaken for other types) but certainly they are now a foot unit with foot repsonses to charges etc (kind of like with the downside of putting LI in an El unit). and except for the minimal impact on command retirments who really cares if the LI run away? <g>
so how does this impact distance behind for the lancers in approach etc?
on the other hand, maybe like LI+El they can bolster the numbers against enemy shooting? doesn't really seem workable though somehow. needs some serious brain work. |
