Greetings everyone,
Recently a new player has approached me and asked if I could put together a competative list for the Mongols and Timurids. I was wondering if any of you that had the time would consider posting what you think would be competative to help out. My lists seem to have too few Mongol Light Cavalry and don't really give the feel of a Mongol horde without using non Mongol types like the Turkish allies (irrg d lc b types), after all, one should be able to field a "horde" of Mongol cav to give that "horse archer" feel to the army, right? Now just to clarify, I don't just want to see a gob of LC in lists, I want to see how you guys would make these two lists competative, say for the NICT or an open tournament at Historicon or Coldwars. Thanks,
kelly |

Kelly,
There are two lists in the NICT for 1600 pts for you to check out.
Here is a 1200 pt. list I ran at a Historicon 2 years ago.
MONGOL
1199 pts – 80 scouting
CinC 2E Mongol Guards Reg A EHC L,B,Sh + PA (210)
Sub 2E Mongol Guards Reg A EHC L,B,Sh + PA (140)
5x 2E Mongol Cav Reg B HC L,B,Sh [88]
3x 2E Mongol Horse Archers Reg B LC B ½ Jls,Sh (46)
5x 2E Mongol Horse Archers Reg B LC B ,Sh (42)
6E Turkish Horse Archers Ir C LC B ½ Jls,Sh (91)
I love the little units of cav. The big unit of LC is to take out large units of LC or LI. The little units are there to dart in and out of gaps and hit flanks. The HC dismount well vs. Elephants.
Just my thoughts,

The impression of a horde can be created by having whatever number of guys you have and moving them at the speed of light.
I understand that the Mongols whatever number they were appeared to be a multitude!

Todd and Adrian,
Thanks a million for your responses! Todd, how would this list hold up to contemporary horse archers like early Turks or Hsiung Nu? Or for that matter, Sassanids who aren't it the period but certainly are a contender in Warrior? Just seeing your commentary would be great for my friend Mirvin as he has heard enough of my philosophy. Do you think you could work up 400 more points for this list and talk about how you would use it tactically and what type of terrain you would suggest? I understand if you can't as we are all busy, heck, I have an Urban Debate League tournament right after school this evening...
By the way, can anyone get in touch with Scott McDonald? He did splendidly with his Mongols in the 25mm open at Historicon, I'd love to get his take on list making for Mongols. That guy is another awesome player like you Todd. Adrian, I've never had the pleasure to play you, hence my reserved opinion!
Kelly
PS Adrian, Do you think you could come up with a list that you think could help us out? |

I can't do a whole list off hand but the last Mongol comp list I used was for CanCon 2006 and ws for 15mm 1650 points preset terrain on 6 by 4 tables
roughly it was like this
CinC with 2e HC L B Sh
1 or 2 Mongol Subs the same
2 x Chinese Foot - 4 e Reg D MI LTS SH and 4 e Reg D MI B
2 x Chinese Skirmishers 4 e Reg D LI B
3 units Mongol HC Reg A Reg B HC L B Sh
Some Turks - roughly 2 units of roughly 6 el Irr D LC B
The rest of the army was 2 e units of Mongol LC all with B and JLS I think and half with Shield
It was a good army
The impression of a horde is not created by having tons of Mongols per se but by having Mongols everywhere you need them to be and often behind the enemy
It goes very well if there is room to move
I will try and dig up the list to post it
