I have recently aquired Van Wees' book on Greek Warfare. Its very readable and his arguments seem well supported. This got mi interested in doing a hoplite army, and I went to the CW lists.

I was surprised to find that Hoplites in the Later Hoplite list are not allowed to be HI even as an upgrade. I know that most scholars think that Hoplite armor got lighter over time (Van Wees thinks this is wrong), but to not allow this even as a limited upgrade and assume that all those muscle cuirasses were in museums by this time seems a bit extreme. OTOH, you folks probably know more about this than I do. Why do the lists go from all mandatory HI to all mandatory MI? WHy no optional upgrades in the later list? just curious.

OOOOOOPS! FInally noticed the last line allowing 1/2 to be upgraded to HI. Never mind <shamefaced blushing grin>.
