Has anyone out there read any good books that focus on the history of the Achaean League, the Aetolian League, and Greece in general during the period roughly from 275 B.C. to 146 B.C.? I know my Polybius pretty well (as he relates to the Greeks), but I can't recall any modern author or historian doing a book on this lately. W.W. Tarn wrote a bio of Antogonus Gonatos (300 or so-239) many years ago, and much has been written about Pyrrhus, Hannibal, and the Romans, but nothing I know of on Aratus, Philopoemen, Nabis, and the like since Plutarch. Anyone know of something I should be reading on this score? If not, I may have to start writing. _________________ -Greek |

Try E. R. R. Errington, Philopoemon (Clarendon Press, 1969). Errington is sound across the board, but this effort is particulary good on the military aspects of an otherwise obscure period. |
