Jon or anyone else willing to answer,
A 3rd or 4th rank loose order element with 2HCW + shield participated in combat (using a "Barbarian" charge) using "other weapons" in Round 1. The enemy is recoiled and the same 3rd or 4th rank element (not disordered) is following up and is permitted to expand into an overlapping element of the "recoiled" enemy unit in Round 2 of combat.
Does the 2HCW loose order element count shieldless since it fought last round as "other weapons" in the "Barbarian charge" or would it count shielded since it is now 2HCW "at 1st contact"?
Thank you in advance for your answer and Happy Thankgiving to all,

Rich,
If you're overlapping and not in face to face contact, I would think that it would not matter as you are not in contact with enemy. I certainly am interested in the answer from the rules guy though.

Kelly,
I agree with you if it is overlapping. But my question has to do with "face to face" contact on the 2nd round from an expansion of the 3rd or 4th rank element from the 1st round "Barbarian charge".

Read page 3 of the rule book. It defines First Contact.
In the example you provide, the elements in question would be shieldless.

So in this situation: My one element wide by 2 deep legionaires unit are in contact with Gauls, I charge through the legionaire elements with my Praetorian unit of the same size.
The Praetorian are at FIRST CONTACT?? Yes or No
Do the Gauls consider it as first contact? I say NO,
But what of the Praetorians?
I know this has been explained before, I remember figuring it out and asking a long time ago, but now I can't remember what was said.

"First Contact: A situation where an element (and any
behind it) in the current bound charged, counter-charged,
was charged or is involved in resolving a converted charge.
An exception is a body charged by troops replacing others in
contact (6.523) – an element charged by replacers does not
count as in first contact."
Praetrians yes, Gauls no. _________________ Roll Up and Win! |
