Mattilcar and his Noble Cav, with the skill and precision of seasoned veterans, dove into the Spanish Light Cav, accelerated their pursuit and caught the usually faster lights, breaking them in an instant, then adroitly returning to the main battle. As he again drew near, he observed that Agapelogus was fully engaged. He instinctively knew, now was the time. ATTACK. Messengers were sent along his line. Push forward. The Carthaginian Veteran Hoplites responded eagerly as they saw their general return. The Carthaginian Gauls and peltasts likewise pushed into the brush.

The 10000 with their Allied hoplites dug their spears in as the Carthaginians collided into their phalanx line. They held.

The Lakedaimonians and Spartiates stepped forward, all cognizant that the hour had arrived. Leonidas shifted his shield closer and the opposing hoplite phalanxes smashed together. They locked. “We should have pushed them back,” he thought. Philon, standing next to him, twisted to Leonidas, “look at the left flank, they overlap us.” Leonidas, distracted, turned to look. The Carthaginian mercenary facing him, with years of training and hard experience, thrust his long spear forward. Leonidas felt the keen piercing pain, then all went black.

The Lakedaimonians recoiled like an injured animal. Philon caught Leonidas as he fell. The unit slowly withdrew, surrounding and shielding their wounded leader. The Syracusan Spanish on the left were the first to react. Panic spread like the wind. The whole Spartan left was in retreat. The Spartiates to the right held the longest, but knew that they too must cover the Lakedaimonian retreat.
