The Rhone Plain:

“We have caught Mattwebsterix off guard” smiled Memnon.

“Yes, he didn’t expect us so quickly, he is stuck on the plain. He was trying to retreat to more rough terrain.” Laughed Xenophon.
(Matt only got two of his terrain pieces and then barely, He even has the plus for Cold)

Leonidas’s gaze scoped the field. Only two major terrain pieces: a marshy ground on his rear left flank and a woods on his center right flank.

“My command will take the right.” Leonidas said. “Xenophon, you take the middle. Memnon take the left.”

“He is refusing his left. Look he is deploying his MI in the marshy ground on his extreme left and two warbands to their immediate right, Then two HC and a unit of LCh more in the middle. He is moving on the right with LI and two more warbands to the woods. As far as I can see that unit of HC and LCh are moving toward the far right. They will be yours Memnon.” Observed Leonidas.

“We will hold them, but if he refuses his left you will have long march across to get him.” Continued Memnon. “Do not delay, I will not be able to hold for long.” He added as he leaped upon his horse and rode off.

“Take care, Leonidas!” pleaded Xenophon jokingly. “No more ‘On your shield’. It was too close last time.”
Leonidas only smiled, pulled his helmet down and moved off to the right.

Leonidas’s command moved toward the marshy area and the Gallic left. As they approached the middle ground, Philon shouted, “Leonidas, the 10000 is not moving.”
Leonidas turned and looked back to his left. A puzzled look materialized on his face and soon turned to concern.
“Send a messenger and order them to move forward quickly. Cover our left and middle”

(rolled 1 on character of general , then rolled 1 in interpretation of orders)

Xenophon turned angrily to his left, walked out to the front of the line and shouted, “Move out!!!” Pointing across the field. No one moved. Slowly, as he paned the frontage, he calmed down somewhat.
“What is the problem!!” He commanded. “Tell me! Tell me now. Look Leonidas is already almost across the field.”
“The omens this morning were not good.” A voice replied from among the ranks.
“We follow you and Leonidas, but must we forget the gods.” Another continued.
Suddenly, a messenger approaches from the right.
“Leonidas, desires that you move forward quickly to cover his left.” He pants breathlessly.
Xenophon turns quickly to the 10000, shouts and raises his spear and points to the right
“Look!!! Do you want to bring Leonidas home on his shield?”
There is a rumble again the men; heads turn and after a short but long pause. Finally, heads clicked forward and spears lowered. Xenophon ran back to the rank and the line moved forward.

In the interim, the center Gallic HC and LCh moved quickly to confront Xenophon’s peltast and Spanish. The LCh charged the Spanish. They shook but held. The HC shouted and skirmished with the peltasts.

The Gallic Warbands and unit of LI moved into and across the woods. The Cretans and LI Javelinmen waited on the far side for them. Hoping
to delay the Gauls.

Memnon moved the LC to skirmish with the Gallic LCh. The LCh charged the LC and forced them to route away. Memnon saw he opportunity and raised his javelin and shouted.
“Now, followed me to victory.”
A shout went up and they galloped into the LCh. The LCh evaded away but failed to clear their HC disordering them and were caught by Memnon. Memnon and his HC melted into the LCh and charged into the Gallic HC. Soon Memnon and his Cav were swirling into the Gauls.

Over on the far distance right of the field, Leonidas reached the MI in the marshy area and charged home disordering himself and them and pushing them back.
Leonidas’s Peltasts locked with the Warband to his front with the Spanish coming up to give the follow up blow.

Unexpectedly, to Memnon’s right, a messenger appears.
“Memnon….Memnon, the Javelinmen, your Hamippoi, and the Cretans are routed by the warbands coming through the woods. We are flanked by the warbands and soon to be encircled. Move back quickly or we are lost.
He looked around and reluctantly called, “ Back….Back”

Soon word reached Leonidas. Philon declared, “Leonidas…. Look to your left. Word has come that Memnon’s command is in retreat. We have no word of him.”
Leonidas gruelingly looks to his front. He is pushing the Gauls. But soon he knows he must cover Memnon and his army. Mattwebsterix has succeeded in delaying me long enough but we have pushed him away from Marseille. There will be another day.
“Back…..Back….Breakoff….”
Besides, he will have to discern what happened with Xenophon.
