Portlandia:
Triremes slid up on the beach and Light Infantry jumped down, looking for any enemy presence. They moved inland slowly. Soon more infantry started to disembark, and then the cargo galleys began the unloading of the horses.
Leonidas waded ashore and surveyed the coast. Soon he was joined by Damaphades, commander of his Allied Hoplites.
“What do you think, Leonidas”
“Lilrobles (Robert Turnbull) has moved. Hopefully, our Light Cavalry will give us more information. I have ordered them to move out and scout the enemy. Inform the unit leaders that we will camp there, on that high ground.”
Soon the strand was a mass of Hoplites and Light Infantry, all moving toward the location of the new camp.
Memnon rode up to Leonidas, reined in his horse and called out,
“Leonidas, I have sent out our Lights to scout.”
“Good, we will meet tonight to assess our move tomorrow. Collect our Commanders and bring all intelligences reports.”
The sun was getting low and the camp was a mass of men still organizing and laying it out.
The flap of Leonidas’ tent opened and in walked the unit commanders. Leonidas looked up from studying his maps and reports.
“Thanks for coming. It seems that Memnon was right to bring extra Light Cav. It gave us good scouting results. Unfortunately, Lilrobles has broken camp on Lake Sebago and is moving quickly; he has already crossed the Stroudwater River and is heading south. There is more bad news. Not only have we lost the benefit of the river line, but with Memnon’s extra Light Cav we have outscouted him.
“And, regrettably, their Thessalian Cav is better than ours,” added Memnon.
“Yes, you will have your hands full with them,” replied Xenophon
“Lilrobles is not our only problem. There is also a hostile Etruscan army in the area, commanded by Vel Hathisna (Bill Low). He is predictable, but we are likely to have two hard battles tomorrow. For now, return to your commands. Xenophon and Memnon, remain here and we will finish the final details. |
